Four converters on one page
US and UK data sheets give the dimensions and capacities of a truck in miles, gallons and pounds, and the speeds in miles per hour. The four converters above take each of these to the metric unit and back: distance (km and miles), speed (km/h and mph), volume (litres, US gallons and imperial gallons) and mass (kilograms, tonnes, pounds, US short tons and UK long tons).
The factors
| Unit | In metric | Exact? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mile | 1.609344 km | exact |
| 1 mph | 1.609344 km/h | exact |
| 1 US gallon | 3.785412 l | seven significant digits |
| 1 imperial gallon | 4.54609 l | exact |
| 1 pound | 0.4535924 kg | seven significant digits |
| 1 short ton (2,000 lb) | 907.1847 kg | seven significant digits |
| 1 long ton (2,240 lb) | 1,016.047 kg | seven significant digits |
All seven values are the ones NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8, prints; it sets the exact ones in bold. The calculators use them as printed and round only the displayed result.
Pounds and tons
“Ton” means three different masses. The metric tonne is 1,000 kg. The US short ton is 2,000 lb, 907.1847 kg, and the UK long ton is 2,240 lb, 1,016.047 kg. So 40 tonnes are 88,184.9 lb, which is 44.09 short tons or 39.37 long tons.
Quick answers
- How many mph is 90 km/h?
- 55.92 mph. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so km/h divided by 1.609344 gives mph.
- How many pounds is 40 tonnes?
- 88,184.9 lb, or 44.09 US short tons of 2,000 lb.
- How many litres is a US gallon?
- 3.785412 litres according to NIST; the imperial gallon used in the UK is exactly 4.54609 litres.
