Volvo D17 engine: 17-litre diesel, ratings, fuels and trucks
Volvo's 17.3-litre six-cylinder Euro 6 diesel from Volvo's own documents: announced in 2024 for the FH16 and FH16 Aero, 600–780 hp, HVO, and B100 at 700 hp.

The Volvo D17 is Volvo Trucks’ 17-litre diesel engine: six cylinders, a displacement of 17.3 dm³ and the Euro 6 emission standard, as Volvo Trucks UK’s specifications pages give it. Volvo announced it on 30 January 2024 as “a new 17-litre engine for its FH16 truck”, in three ratings: 600 hp with 3,000 Nm, 700 hp with 3,400 Nm and 780 hp with 3,800 Nm. Volvo offers it in the Volvo FH16 and the FH16 Aero; in the FH16 it followed Volvo’s 16-litre engines. Volvo gave mid-2024 for the start of sales and the second half of 2024 for the start of production.
Status as of 26 October 2026. Volvo Trucks’ engine range page and global FH16 page, Volvo Trucks UK’s FH16 and FH16 Aero specifications pages, the FH16 and FH16 Aero infosheets, and Volvo releases of 2011, 2020 and 2024 were read on 26 October 2026. Figures are given in hp and Nm as Volvo gives them, with Volvo’s own kW figures for the ratings; how these units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.
What the D17 is
Volvo names the engine D17 in every document read that describes it. Volvo Trucks UK’s specifications pages head their engine table “D17 – power/torque” and list the ratings as “D17 600 hp (441 kW)”, “D17 700 hp (515 kW)” and “D17 780 hp (574 kW)”; none of the documents adds a letter or generation code to the name. The FH16 and FH16 Aero specifications pages give the same base data:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Diesel |
| Emission standard | Euro 6 |
| Number of cylinders | 6 |
| Displacement | 17.3 dm³ |
| Bore | 149 mm |
| Stroke | 165 mm |
| Compression ratio | 17.3:1 |
| Economy revs | 900–1,300 r/min |
| Exhaust braking effect | 246 kW at 2,200 r/min |
| Engine brake effect (optional) | 525 kW at 2,200 r/min |
| Fuel prerequisites | Sulphur-free fuel (EN590, max 10 ppm sulphur); bio-diesel generation 2 (EN15940, synthetic diesel) |
What an exhaust brake and an engine brake are, and how the law groups them with retarders, is explained in What is a retarder?
Volvo’s release of 30 January 2024 describes the D17 with a single turbocharger, Volvo’s “patented wave piston design” and a “new injection system”.
Fuels
The D17 is a diesel engine. Volvo Trucks UK’s specifications pages give its fuel prerequisites as sulphur-free fuel to EN590, with a maximum of 10 ppm sulphur, and “Bio-diesel generation 2” to EN15940; what the EN 15940 standard covers is explained in What is HVO?
Volvo’s release of 30 January 2024 says the D17 “is certified to run on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in all power ratings” and that the 700 hp version “is also certified to run on 100% biodiesel (B100)”. Volvo Trucks UK’s FH16 specifications page marks the 700 hp rating “available with B100, biodiesel”; its FH16 Aero specifications page carries no such mark.
Emission class
Volvo Trucks UK lists the D17’s emission standard as Euro 6, and Volvo’s release of 30 January 2024 calls it a “new 17-litre Euro 6 engine”. The documents read do not name the Euro 6 step of the engine; the steps are explained in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks.
Generations and dates
The D17, announced 30 January 2024. Volvo’s release of that day says “The new engine is available in the all-new Volvo FH16 Aero and the latest version of the Volvo FH16”, gives mid-2024 for the start of sales and the second half of 2024 for the start of production. Volvo’s release of 11 June 2024 repeats the dates: the FH16 and FH16 Aero with the D17 “will be available for ordering as from mid-2024”. The documents read describe one generation of the D17; none of them announces a later version.
Before the D17: Volvo’s 16-litre engines. In the FH16 the D17 follows Volvo’s 16-litre engine line. Volvo’s news of 8 September 2011 traces that line to the Volvo F16 of 1987, which had Volvo’s first 16-litre engine, at 470 hp, and lists the steps since: 520 hp in 1993; “Ten years later an all-new engine arrived, producing 610 hp”; 700 hp in 2008; and 750 hp in 2011, with production of the first 750 hp FH16 trucks for the European market to begin early in 2012. Volvo’s release of 27 February 2020 names the 16-litre engine of the FH16 generation launched that day as the D16K, Euro 6 Step D, at 550, 650 and 750 hp. Volvo’s release of 11 June 2024 calls the earlier truck the “predecessor” and names its engine as the “D16 750 hp”. The history of the truck itself is set out on the Volvo FH16 page.
Ratings as Volvo states them
| Rating | Power | Maximum power at | Torque | Maximum torque at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D17 600 hp | 600 hp (441 kW) | 1,500–1,700 r/min | 3,000 Nm | 900–1,400 r/min |
| D17 700 hp | 700 hp (515 kW) | 1,600–1,700 r/min | 3,400 Nm | 950–1,400 r/min |
| D17 780 hp | 780 hp (574 kW) | 1,700 r/min | 3,800 Nm | 1,000–1,200 r/min |
Volvo’s engine range page gives the same three output levels, “600 hp, 700 hp, or 780 hp”, and “up to 3800 Nm of torque” for the top rating. The FH16 infosheet gives other engine speeds for the same ratings: for the 600 hp, maximum power at 1,380–1,700 r/min and maximum torque at 900–1,380 r/min; for the 700 hp, 1,700 and 938–1,400 r/min; for the 780 hp, 1,700 and 1,008–1,400 r/min. The documents do not explain the difference.
Volvo’s global FH16 page lists the three D17 ratings with “Choose between 600 hp, 700 hp and 780 hp” and closes its D17 section with “Available in selected markets”. The same page gives the truck’s power range as 540–780 hp, “dependent on market”; none of the documents read lists a D17 rating of 540 hp.
Trucks and buses on this site with the Volvo D17
All entries are trucks; no bus on this site records the D17. The figures are those of each model’s own page and of the source that page cites, in kilowatts and newton-metres as the site’s records keep them.
| Model | Engine as recorded | Power (kW) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo FH16 | Volvo D17 | 441–574 | 3,000–3,800 |
The Volvo FH16 page also covers the FH16 Aero, which Volvo Trucks UK lists with the same three D17 ratings.
