Road sweepers and water tankers on truck chassis: EN 17106, PM10 labels, chassis and body builders
Why EN 13019 gave way to EN 17106, what EN 15429 and the PM10 label measure, the chassis makers prepare for sweepers, the body builders, water tankers and electric sweepers.

A truck-mounted road sweeper is a truck chassis with a sweeping body: brushes, a suction fan, a hopper for the swept material and a water tank for dust suppression. The body is driven by its own auxiliary engine or by the truck’s engine, through a power take-off (PTO) or a hydrostatic drive. A water tanker washes roads or suppresses dust with a pump; in Turkish the word arazöz covers both such a municipal water tanker and a fire water tender. This page sets out which standards and rules apply, what truck makers and body builders publish, and which electric sweepers are running. It does not rank or recommend any of them.
Standards
EN 13019, the former safety standard for road surface cleaning machines, has been withdrawn and replaced by EN 17106-1:2021 (general requirements) and EN 17106-2:2021 (specific requirements for road surface cleaning machines). EN 17106-1 applies to road surface cleaning machines, winter maintenance equipment and grass and brush cutting machines, and deals with equipment permanently mounted on carrier vehicles and with interchangeable equipment; it does not deal with the carrier vehicles themselves, such as trucks, nor with sewer cleaning vehicles or refuse collection vehicles. Both parts are harmonised under the Machinery Directive, listed in Implementing Decision (EU) 2023/1586, which withdrew the reference to EN 13019 with effect from 2 February 2025. The German engineering association VDMA lists a revision of EN 17106 as of November 2025, without dates.
The EN 15429 series covers sweepers in four parts: classification and terminology (2007), performance requirements and test methods (2012), a test of how efficiently a sweeper collects PM10 and PM2.5 particles (2015), and symbols for operator controls (2015). Part 3 sets no pass or fail criteria and leaves out sweepers configured as flushing machines; no part of EN 15429 is harmonised. ISO 24147:2023 gives commercial specifications for sweepers and defines a street-washing machine, which puts water under pressure onto the road from an onboard tank, and a street-flushing machine, which does so without pressure; we found no European adoption of it.
The best-known particulate rating is an industry label, not a standard. EUnited, the European association of municipal equipment makers, awards three or four stars on a test it says is aligned with DIN EN 15429-3:2015, to its members’ machines only; its list of 30 April 2026 has 211 machines, 60 of them truck-mounted. For water tankers and road-washing bodies we found no EN standard; whether such a body counts as a road surface cleaning machine under EN 17106 depends on a definition that is not public.
Type approval and machinery law
In EU type approval, Regulation (EU) 2018/858, as published in 2018, has no special purpose category for either vehicle. Its two-digit bodywork supplements include “19 Street sweeper, cleansing and drain clearing” and “11 Tank”; the Regulation does not say which digit a road-washing tanker carries. The same list has tippers under 10 and refuse collection vehicles under 18; see tipper trucks, refuse collection vehicles and sewer-cleaning and vacuum trucks. The Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027; we found no list of harmonised standards under it yet.
Chassis the makers offer
In alphabetical order, as each maker presents it; BMC has no municipal sweeper or water-tanker page, and its only water tanker, an 8x2 with 20,000 l, sits in its defence range:
- DAF. DAF launched the XB, from 7.5 to 19 t, with pre-defined chassis layouts for road sweepers and tippers, in which the fuel tanks, exhaust, batteries and air tanks are repositioned. Its spec sheet for the XB 190 16 t road sweeper gives a 3.26 m wheelbase, an application connector for the road sweeper, an optional rear engine PTO for pump drive and an unladen weight of 3,991 kg.
- Ford Trucks. Ford’s Turkish pages offer 4x2 vacuum road and runway sweepers of 7 to 9 m³ on the 1833 DC, and water tankers as 4x2, 6x2, 8x2, 6x4 and 8x4 with tanks of 8,000 to 18,000 l.
- Iveco. Iveco offers factory mounting solutions for sweeper bodies on the Eurocargo at 15 and 16 t, with short wheelbases of 3,350 to 3,690 mm and the batteries, tanks and exhaust moved behind the cab, and calls it the only vehicle in its class with a chassis configuration dedicated to CNG sweepers; its mission block gives the Road-Sweeper model 7.5 to 19 t.
- MAN. MAN’s TipMatic SWEEPER adapts the gearshift points and engine speed of the MAN TipMatic gearbox to the driving and cleaning mode of a fully hydraulically driven sweeper, and MAN offers an all-wheel-drive TGM with ground clearance for sweeping and suction equipment under the frame.
- Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz names front-mounted and body-mounted sweeping machines and water tanks among its municipal applications, without sweeper figures; Koluman builds its KRS 60 sweeper on an Atego 1518 4x2.
- Renault Trucks. Renault offers sweeper-specific models in its D range with a crossbar and cleared side members to make room for the brushes, suction and blower, and a steel bumper for sweeper-washers.
- Scania. Scania showed a battery-electric P-cab 4x2 road sweeper at IFAT 2026, without figures.
- Volvo. Volvo’s 2018 product guide offers the FL factory-prepared for sweepers at 12 or 16 t, with tanks, battery box and exhaust moved out of the way; in 2022 Volvo UK reported an order for 39 FE 250 4x2 18 t trucks with Bucher Municipal sweeper bodies.
Sweeper bodies and body builders
| Builder and model | Hopper | Water tank | Chassis | Body drive |

| Koluman KRS 60 | — | — | Mercedes-Benz Atego 1518 4x2 | auxiliary engine of 85 kW |
Bucher states a four-star EUnited rating for the V65 and Aebi Schmidt for the Street King 660; Bucher measures its hopper as voided volume to EN 15429 and Dulevo as gross volume. Turkish builders publish ranges from about 3.5 to 12 m³, among them Çeksan’s CityRay and its 4 m³ CityEagle, Kademe’s KDM series and Erdemli; Çeksan says its bodies suit almost all vehicle models.
Water tankers
Of the water-tanker bodies we found, all are on Turkish builders’ pages. Kademe gives 8,000 to 18,000 l on its water-tanker page, while its model table starts at 3,000 l; the tanks are steel with an epoxy or stainless lining, the pump is usually driven by the PTO, an auxiliary engine is optional, and nozzles sit at the front, rear and sides. Its model table lists a pump of 1,500 l/min at 10 bar. KARBA builds water tankers of up to 20,000 l with a centrifugal pump driven from the truck engine, typically 1,500 l/min at 10 bar, and Teknik Tanker uses a split-shaft PTO-driven pump of 1,500 l/min at 8 to 10 bar. Sweepers can wash as well: Bucher offers a hopper transfer port for street washing, and FAUN high-pressure systems of up to 300 bar, or 400 bar on the VIAJET 9 and 14.
Electric sweepers
| Sweeper | Chassis | Battery | Operation as stated | Hopper and water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bucher MaxPowa V65e | 16 t, make not named | 200 kWh LFP | up to 8 hours of sweeping to EN 15429-2, transit range 200 km | 6.5 m³, 1,545 l |
| FAUN VIAJET E | Designwerk, based on Volvo | 250 or 500 kWh | 10 hours of use without intermediate charging | 6.4 or 7.6 m³ |
| Scania battery-electric road sweeper | Scania P-cab 4x2 | — | — | — |
Bucher’s product page gives the V65e DC charging at up to 130 kW in 60 minutes from 20 to 80 %, while its 2023 spec sheet gives up to 150 kW in under two hours; we have not resolved the difference. How range and battery figures are declared is explained in how electric truck range is declared.
Quick answers
- Which standard applies to truck-mounted road sweepers?
- EN 17106-1:2021 and EN 17106-2:2021, which replaced EN 13019 and are harmonised under the Machinery Directive. They cover the sweeping equipment mounted on the truck, not the truck itself. The EN 15429 series adds classification, performance tests and a PM10/PM2.5 test method, none of it harmonised.
- What does the EUnited PM10 label mean?
- It is an industry label of EUnited, the European association of municipal equipment makers, based on a test it says is aligned with DIN EN 15429-3:2015, and awarded with three or four stars to members' machines. Its list of 30 April 2026 has 211 machines, 60 of them truck-mounted.
- What is an arazöz?
- In Turkish the word covers both a municipal water tanker for washing roads and a fire water tender. Kademe and MVK call their municipal water tankers su tankeri (arazöz), while Ford Trucks Türkiye uses arazöz on its fire-truck page. We found no EN standard for water tankers or road-washing bodies.
- How large is the hopper of a road sweeper?
- The bodies on this page range from 4 m³ (Çeksan CityEagle) to 14.5 m³ (FAUN VIAJET 14); on a 15 to 18 t chassis, Bucher's MaxPowa V65 has 6.5 m³ and Aebi Schmidt's Street King 660 7 m³. Makers state the volume on different bases, so the figures are not directly comparable.
- Are there electric road sweepers?
- Yes. Bucher's MaxPowa V65e has a 200 kWh battery and up to 8 hours of sweeping measured to EN 15429-2; FAUN's VIAJET E runs on a Designwerk chassis based on Volvo with 250 or 500 kWh; and Scania showed a battery-electric P-cab 4x2 road sweeper at IFAT 2026.
