Tipper trucks: rear and three-way tippers, chassis, body builders and tipping stability

Why no EN standard covers the tipper body, what machinery law requires, the chassis truck makers offer for tippers, the body builders, tipping stability and electric tippers.

A tipper, or dump truck, is a rigid truck whose body is raised by a hydraulic cylinder to unload bulk material: to the rear, or on a three-way tipper to the rear and to either side. The cylinder is usually fed by a pump that a power take-off (PTO) drives; Hyva offers electric power packs for underbody cylinders where a PTO is not used. The chassis comes from a truck maker, the body and the hydraulics usually from a body builder. This page sets out which standards and rules apply, what truck makers and body builders publish about chassis, bodies and tipping stability, and which electric tippers are running. It does not rank or recommend any of them.

Standards: none for the body itself

In the catalogues and searches we checked, we found no European (EN) standard for tipper bodies, tipper trucks or tipping cylinders; we did not query the CEN database itself. The closest international standard is ISO 22138:2022, a tilt-table test method for estimating a vehicle’s lateral stability during tipping. It applies to rear and side tippers on trucks and trailers above 3.5 t (categories N2, N3, O3 and O4) and produces a limit curve of the vehicle’s rollover threshold at different body inclinations. The UK adopted it unchanged as BS ISO 22138 in February 2023; we found no EN ISO adoption.

Germany has two national standards. DIN 70073:2011 sets stability test methods and categories for air-suspended rear-tipping semi-trailers, not for rigid trucks, and DIN 70001:2018 covers the design of thermally insulated tipping bodies, such as those used for asphalt; its scope text is not public. Body builders also refer to load-securing standards: Meiller’s three-way tipper manual says its side walls meet EN 12642 Code XL and its lashing points EN 12640, although EN 12640 excludes vehicles built exclusively for bulk materials. Both standards are explained in load securing.

Machinery law and type approval

A tipper body is machinery. The European Commission’s guide to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC names tipper bodies among the machinery mounted on means of transport: the Directive does not apply to the road vehicle itself, but it applies to the mounted machinery and to every aspect of its interface with the chassis that may affect safe travel and operation. Under the requirement for devices that exceed the normal clearance zone, the guide names truck-mounted tipper bodies: the driver must be able to check that they are in a safe travel position, with indicators or warning devices at the driving position if that is not easy to see, and interlocking systems should prevent travel while they are not, provided this creates no other risk. Meiller, for example, issues an EC declaration of conformity for its three-way tipper as mounted on the truck chassis. The guide covers the Directive, not the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which applies from 20 January 2027.

In EU type approval, Regulation (EU) 2018/858, as published in 2018, gives tippers no special purpose category; they appear as the two-digit bodywork supplement “10 Tipper”. The same list has refuse collection vehicles under 18, concrete mixers under 15 and fire engines under 31; see refuse collection vehicles, truck mixers and concrete pumps and fire engines on truck chassis. The list also has 19 for street sweepers, cleansing and drain clearing; see sewer-cleaning and vacuum trucks and road sweepers and water tankers.

In Germany, the accident-prevention regulation DGUV Vorschrift 70 adds operating rules. A tipping body must be securable against lowering by a positive lock in at least one raised position, and the lock must act automatically where people have to go onto or under the raised body; exceeding the end position of tipping must be prevented; and a power-tipping vehicle must show the driver clearly, by sight or sound, when the tipping device is not in its lowest position, unless the tipping device sits in front of the driver’s seat.

Tipping stability

No chassis maker’s page we read offers a tipping-stability assistant, the current body builder guidelines of MAN, DAF and Ford Trucks sit behind logins, and Scania’s tipper instruction could not be downloaded. The only maker guideline we could read is DAF’s for the LF, CF and XF105, an edition from 2010. It asks for tipper bodies preferably on 310 mm side members and for air suspension to be lowered to the bump stops during tipping, and it rules out tipper bodies on 6x2 and 8x2 chassis with single wheels on the trailing axle. It lists what helps stability: a stiff rear overhang and body, a ram as far forward as possible, a short rear overhang, independent chassis support at the rear, a scissor-type tipping stabiliser, and skilled operation on firm, level ground. It puts stability during operation on the body builder and the user.

Meiller’s manual for its three-way tipper allows tipping only with the vehicle level on firm ground, asks for air suspension to be lowered unless the vehicle maker lowers it automatically, forbids driving off with the body raised and requires warning lamps for the PTO and the raised body; with a loaded body and the tailgate in its metering position the tipping angle must not exceed 30°. Meiller and Wielton fit scissor-type stabilisers, and Meiller says its version has a 30 % higher torsional strength. A German accident insurers’ guide for tipper semi-trailers notes that 4 to 5 bar less tyre pressure on one side lowers that side by about 30 mm, almost 1° of lateral tilt, which raises the risk of overturning when tipping.

Warnings in the cab come from both sides. Arslan Damper sounds an alarm and lights a red lamp in the cab from the moment the tipper switch is operated until the body rests on the chassis — standard on its public-sector vehicles, optional on others — and Schmitz Cargobull connects a tipper warning light in the cab. Scania’s factory tipper preparation adds dashboard switches for the body and the tailboard, lamps and messages for the bodywork, and two extra speed limits that can be programmed for it.

Chassis the makers offer for tippers

In alphabetical order, as each maker presents it; BMC lists Tuğra construction chassis as 6x4 and 8x4 but does not say on the pages we read which version is meant for tippers:

  • DAF. DAF calls its XDC and XFC construction trucks, with two, three or four axles, the ideal basis for tippers, concrete mixers and hook lifts, and offers factory preparations for tippers in its Plug & Play programme. Its electric XD and XF 6x4 FAT, at 29 t GVW, is in DAF’s words more than suitable for tipper and concrete mixer applications, with an optional 650 V electric PTO of 25, 60 or 100 kW that can power a tipper installation.
  • Ford Trucks. Ford’s Turkish page offers tipper trucks as 4x2, 6x2, 8x2, 6x2 and 8x2 with a tag axle, 6x4 and 8x4, with bodies of 8 to 26 m³ in Hardox or St-52 steel. Its July 2026 data sheet gives the 1833D, 2533D and 3233SD a 9-litre engine of 330 PS and a 7 mm S355MC frame, and the 3545D, 4145D and 4445XD a 12.7-litre engine of 450 PS with 2,300 Nm, or 2,500 Nm in off-road mode, and a 10 mm S500MC frame; the 4445XD 8x4 is rated at 44,000 kg technical and 32,000 kg legal gross weight, with an unladen chassis-cab weight of 11,943 kg. The tipper page lists the 3545D under 8x2 and the 3233SD under 6x4, whereas the model pages and the data sheet give the 3545D as a 6x4 and the 3233SD as an 8x2.
  • Iveco. Iveco offers the X-Way for construction work at 18 to 32 t, from 4x2 to 8x4, and in its off-road version with the HI-TRACTION hydrostatic front-wheel drive, clutch-dependent and clutch-independent PTOs and tipper packs; the T-Way, for quarries, construction sites and mines, runs from 18 to 41 t and from 4x4 to 8x8.
  • MAN. MAN UK’s tipper chassis sheets of May 2022 give the TGS 8x4 medium-height tipper 35,000 kg design and 32,000 kg UK gross weight, an unladen weight of 9,697 kg, a 270 × 85 × 8 mm S500MC frame and an NH/4c PTO, and cover tipper chassis down to the 7.5-tonne TGL 4x2. MAN says its switchable HydroDrive front-wheel drive saves up to 750 kg of payload compared with mechanical all-wheel drive; at Bauma 2025 it showed a TGS 41.480 8x4 designed for large-volume rear tipper bodies, for mining outside Europe at up to 44 t, technically 50 t.
  • Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz offers the Arocs from 4x2 to 8x8/4, with an optional Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive that adds up to 40 kW at each front wheel, and names the three-way tipper among the bodies for the low-entry Econic.
  • Renault Trucks. Renault’s Optitrack puts two hydraulic motors in the front wheel hubs for temporary all-wheel drive on demand, at 450 bar, disengaging at 50 km/h and re-engaging at 20 km/h; Optitrack+ adds 30 % front-wheel torque and is recommended for earthmoving and the transport of aggregates in difficult conditions.
  • Scania. Scania notes that tippers are often optimised for legal road weights and offers factory tipper preparations — control lever, dashboard switches, hydraulic tank position, a body heated by exhaust gas so that loads do not freeze, gearbox and engine PTOs — which it says are mainly designed for a particular market.
  • Volvo. Volvo offers chassis for dump, tipper, mixer and crane trucks from 4x2 to 10x4, a Tandem Axle Lift, and on the FMX front-wheel drive for 8x6 and 10x6, all-wheel drive for 4x4 and 6x6 and bogie loads of up to 38 t.

Wheel formulae such as 8x4 or 8x6 are explained in axle configurations, and technical versus legal gross weights in truck weights: GVW and GCW.

Bodies and body builders

Body builders publish volumes, steel grades and hydraulics, and most of them fit several chassis makes:

  • Meiller (Germany) builds TRIGENIUS three-way tippers with nominal loads of 2 to 28 t, from the D202 on two-axle chassis to the D428 on a 41-tonne four-axle chassis, with a single telescopic cylinder even on four axles; MAXTREME rear tippers with half-round bodies of 17 to 28 m³ or angular bodies of 18 to 28 m³ for nominal loads of 30 to 50 t; insulated asphalt bodies certified to DIN 70001; and bodies it says are compatible with all European electric trucks with a mechanical or electromechanical PTO.
  • Schmitz Cargobull (Germany) gives its M.KI rear tipper body 17 to 22.5 m³ on its web page and 15 to 22 m³ in a 2025 leaflet, on a galvanised, torsion-resistant subframe that it says fits all popular truck makes; its example configurations show an Arocs 8x4 at 42 t and a MAN TGS 8x4 at 41 t.
  • Wielton (Poland) builds its HP Vario Master rear tipper for 3-, 4- or 5-axle chassis of Mercedes-Benz, MAN, Volvo, Renault, DAF, Iveco, Ford and Scania, at 12 to 23 m³ in its 2026 catalogue and 16 to 20 m³ on its web page, with Hardox floors of 6 to 8 mm, a 250 bar hydraulic kit and a scissor stabiliser.
  • Hyva and Binotto supply the hydraulics. Hyva’s Alpha front-end cylinders work at 250 bar, with a tipping valve on the cylinder that also acts as a hose burst valve and knock-off valves that stop tipping before the cylinder reaches the end of its stroke; Binotto offers front-end cylinders with lifting capacities of 7 to 100 t, and both offer underbody cylinders with cradles for three-way tippers.
  • Turkish builders publish on their own sites. Arslan Damper recommends half-pipe bodies of 14 to 20 m³ on 6x4 and 20 to 26 m³ on 8x4 chassis, in Hardox 450 with a 10 mm floor, 8 mm walls and a four-stage telescopic cylinder, and its general-purpose square tipper specification calls for a tipping angle of 40° to 45° with a safety system against exceeding the maximum. Bostancı Damper builds 8x4 tipper bodies of 22 to 27 m³ for 41,000 kg technical gross weight, and Özdoğu Damper rock tippers with side walls 160 to 180 cm high. Arslan Damper and Özdoğu Damper are on Ford Trucks’ list of certified converters.

Meiller notes that on an electric truck the body’s hydraulics need only run while the body is moving. Gross and usable battery capacity are explained in installed vs usable battery capacity, and how makers arrive at range figures in how electric truck range is declared.

Quick answers

Is there a European standard for tipper bodies?
We found none: no EN standard covers tipper bodies, tipper trucks or tipping cylinders in the catalogues and searches we checked. ISO 22138:2022 is a tilt-table test method for a tipper's lateral stability during tipping, and Germany has national standards for air-suspended rear-tipping semi-trailers (DIN 70073) and insulated tipping bodies (DIN 70001). The tipper body itself counts as machinery under the Machinery Directive.
What is a three-way tipper?
A tipper body that can tip to the rear and to either side. It pivots on ball-type tipping points; on Bostancı Damper's three-way tipper the pins are placed on the ball heads by hand for side tipping, and Meiller builds its TRIGENIUS three-way tippers for nominal loads of 2 to 28 t.
How many cubic metres does a tipper truck carry?
It depends on the chassis and the body. Ford Trucks lists bodies of 8 to 10 m³ for its 4x2 1833D and 22 to 26 m³ for its 8x4 models; Arslan Damper recommends 14 to 20 m³ on 6x4 and 20 to 26 m³ on 8x4 chassis; Meiller's MAXTREME rear tippers go up to 28 m³. We found no standard for rating the volume of a road tipper body.
Why must a tipper stand level when it tips?
Makers and body builders tie tipping stability to the ground. Meiller's manual allows tipping only with the vehicle level on firm ground, and DAF's 2010 guidelines list a firm, level surface among the factors for stability. A German accident insurers' guide for tipper semi-trailers notes that 4 to 5 bar less tyre pressure on one side tilts the vehicle by almost 1° and raises the risk of overturning. ISO 22138 tests the rollover threshold at different body angles.
Are there electric tipper trucks?
Yes. Scania shows an XT 6x4 electric tipper with 416 kWh installed and 345 kWh usable for a range of about 300 km; MAN an eTGS crane tipper with 320 kWh and a one-way range of up to 400 km; Volvo has delivered FMX Electric 8x4 Tridem tippers plated at 32 t; Mercedes-Benz gives the eArocs 400 up to 240 km as a tipper in a simulation; and DAF calls its electric 6x4 FAT more than suitable for tippers.
