The Tector 5 is a 4.5-litre, four-cylinder in-line diesel engine that Iveco uses in the Eurocargo, where its brochure describes “Tector 5 four-cylinder 4.5 litre” diesel engines. FPT Industrial, the powertrain brand of the Iveco Group, lists the four-cylinder, 4.5-litre engine of its NEF family as the N45, and Iveco’s three Tector 5 steps appear in FPT’s N45 truck table with the same power, rated speed and torque. On the road FPT certifies the N45 to Euro VI E for trucks and buses, and off the road to Stage V - Tier 4 Final. Iveco presented the Euro VI version with the new Eurocargo Euro VI in a release of 28 November 2013.

Status as of 26 October 2026. FPT’s On-Road Engines & Drivelines brochure (printed 31 May 2026), its On-Road Bus Application leaflet (printed 30 September 2023), four FPT datasheets for single N45 ratings, IVECO’s Eurocargo MY24 brochure and Iveco’s release of 28 November 2013 were read on 26 October 2026.

What the engine is

FPT describes itself in its 2026 brochure as “a brand of Iveco Group, dedicated to the design, production, and sale of powertrains”. Its on-road engines come in three families, F1, NEF and Cursor. The bus leaflet gives the size of the NEF family as “4.5-6.7L”, and the brochure’s NEF pages list its engine models as “N45 (4 cyl., 4.5 L)”, N67 and N67 NG.

The name Tector 5 does not appear in the FPT documents read for this page, and neither Iveco document uses the name N45. Both describe four cylinders in line and 4.5 litres, and the three Tector 5 steps in Iveco’s Eurocargo brochure appear in FPT’s N45 truck table with the same power, rated speed and torque: 118 kW at 2,200 rpm with 680 Nm, 137 kW at 2,200 rpm with 700 Nm, and 152 kW at 2,500 rpm with 750 Nm. This page treats the two names as one engine on that basis.

The on-road column comes from FPT’s 2026 brochure, its bus leaflet and its datasheet for the 152 kW truck rating, which gives the engine’s dimensions as 854 x 782 x 910 mm (length x width x height); the off-road column comes from FPT’s three Stage V datasheets. FPT’s tables add that dimensions and weight “can be changed according to engine options”. The legend expands the on-road aftertreatment as diesel oxidation catalyst, “Diesel Particulate Filter w/ passive regeneration”, selective catalytic reduction and clean-up catalyst.

Fuel, emission class and aftertreatment

Every N45 row in FPT’s truck and bus tables is a diesel row. FPT’s bus leaflet says “All our three engine families are available both in diesel and natural gas version”; in its truck and bus tables the natural-gas member of the NEF family is the 6.7-litre N67 NG, and no N45 row is marked natural gas. None of the FPT or Iveco documents read for this page mentions HVO or another renewable diesel for the N45 or the Tector 5; the fuel itself is described in What is HVO?.

On the road, the emission class is Euro VI E. FPT’s datasheet for the 152 kW truck rating and every N45 row in its truck and bus tables give Euro VI E, and the bus leaflet calls its engines “Compliant with Euro VI step E emissions”. What the Euro VI steps are, and from when each applied, is set out in our page on Euro VI and Euro 7.

FPT calls its aftertreatment technology HI-eSCR. The 2026 brochure lists “FPT exclusive HI-eSCR ATS technology” among the NEF series’ features and describes an “EGR-free architecture (for NEF and CURSOR series)”. Iveco’s 2013 release calls HI-eSCR “patented by FPT Industrial” and says the system “reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by over 95% without altering the combustion process”. How an SCR system works, and what the law requires it to detect, is covered in SCR and AdBlue. Off the road, FPT’s three N45 datasheets give “HI-eSCR2” as the aftertreatment and “Stage V - Tier 4 Final” as the certification.

Ratings as FPT and Iveco state them

FPT’s 2026 brochure lists five N45 truck ratings and two bus ratings, all at Euro VI E. Its bus leaflet lists the same two bus ratings, and each off-road datasheet carries one rating.

Iveco gives its own figures for the Eurocargo, in a table headed “Euro VI engines”:

Tector 5 steps in IVECO’s Eurocargo MY24 brochure
PowerMax torque
118 kW (160 hp) at 2,200 rpm680 Nm from 1,100 to 1,600 rpm
137 kW (190 hp) at 2,200 rpm700 Nm from 1,100 to 1,600 rpm
152 kW (210 hp) at 2,500 rpm750 Nm from 1,400 to 1,800 rpm

The documents print the same kilowatts with different horsepower. For 137 kW and 152 kW, Iveco gives 190 hp and 210 hp where FPT gives 186 hp and 207 hp. FPT’s bus leaflet gives 158 hp for its 118 kW bus rating, where FPT’s 2026 brochure and Iveco both print 160 hp for 118 kW. Iveco states the torque over a band of engine speeds, FPT at a single speed. How kilowatts, horsepower and torque figures relate is set out in how to read a truck’s power figures.

Generations and dates

The documents read for this page date the Euro VI version, and FPT documents printed in 2023 and 2026 give Euro VI E. None of them gives the engine’s first year or the figures of the versions before Euro VI.

  • 28 November 2013: Iveco presents the new Eurocargo Euro VI with “three new Tector 5 models – with 160, 190 and 210 HP”. The release says the displacement of the Tector 5 and Tector 7 “has been increased”, and that the engine power of the Tector 5, “with a displacement of 4.5 litres, has been increased by 13%, permitting the vehicle to reach 210 HP”.
  • 30 September 2023: the printing date of FPT’s On-Road Bus Application leaflet (2024 edition), which lists two N45 bus ratings at Euro VI E.
  • Model year 2024: IVECO’s Eurocargo MY24 brochure lists three Euro VI Tector 5 steps, from 118 to 152 kW.
  • 31 May 2026: the printing date of FPT’s On-Road brochure, which lists five N45 truck ratings and two bus ratings, all at Euro VI E.
  • Undated: FPT’s three off-road N45 datasheets give Stage V - Tier 4 Final.

FPT’s brochure says of the NEF series as a whole: “One engine displacement from Euro III to Euro VI.” The 2013 release does not say which earlier engine its increase in displacement refers to, and neither document gives an earlier displacement for the four-cylinder.
