The MAN D30 is a 12.7-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel engine from MAN Truck & Bus; its type designation is D3066. It was developed jointly by the TRATON GROUP brands, presented by MAN in September 2024 for model year 2025, and is built at MAN’s Nuremberg plant, where production started in February 2025. MAN lists it in six ratings from 279 kW (380 PS) to 412 kW (560 PS), with 2,100 to 2,800 Nm, to the Euro 6e emission standard, and names it for the 4x2 semitrailer tractors of the MAN TGX and TGS. On this site it is one of the engines of the MAN TGS and MAN TGX.

Status as of 26 October 2026. Read that day: MAN’s D30 PowerLion product page, its TGX specifications page, the D30 story on MAN UK’s Trucker’s World pages, and five MAN press releases dated 21 September 2021, 22 March 2023, 19 September 2024, 24 February 2025 and 10 July 2026. All eight are the maker’s own documents.

Maker, name and layout

MAN’s release of 19 September 2024 introduces “the new D3066 (D30 engine for short)”, and the D30 story on MAN UK’s Trucker’s World pages writes it as “The D3066 – D30 for short”. The technical data on MAN’s D30 page read “MAN D3066, 12,7 l, Euro 6e”, and the engine table on MAN’s TGX specifications page lists the D3066 as “6 in-line” with a displacement of 12.7 litres. MAN’s press releases round this to 13 litres: the release of 24 February 2025 speaks of the “13-litre MAN D30 diesel engine”, and the release of 10 July 2026 describes “the MAN D30 in-line six-cylinder engine” as “the 13-litre engine”. None of the documents read gives bore, stroke or engine weight.

The engine is a TRATON GROUP development. MAN’s September 2024 release calls it a “completely newly developed engine”, and its February 2025 release says that “The engine was developed jointly by the TRATON GROUP brands”. MAN builds it at its Nuremberg plant. The February 2025 release says that after the production ramp-up around 160 employees will work on the D30 in three shifts, gives a technical capacity of around 50,000 engines a year, and names MAN’s Salzgitter plant for the crankshaft production. After more than 100 years of diesel engine manufacturing at Nuremberg, the same release says, the D30 “is the last of its kind”, and “there are no plans for a successor generation”.

One generation, and the dates around it

The MAN documents read describe a single generation of the D30. They first use the names D30 and D3066 in September 2024; MAN’s earlier releases speak of a new Group engine and a 13-litre unit to be built in the same Nuremberg plant.

MAN’s September 2021 release describes the CBE as “the joint platform for future diesel engines used in MAN, Scania, and Navistar vehicles”, and its March 2023 release describes the new 13-litre unit as one “that will be jointly used by all brands”. Neither release uses the name D30 or D3066, and none of the documents read states in so many words that the D30 is the CBE.

In September 2024 MAN said the D30 “will replace the previously available D26 and D15 engine series in all MAN 4x2 semitrailer tractors in normal and low heights”; its February 2025 release puts it as “The D30 replaces the previously available D26 and D15 engine series.” The D26 is described on its own page, MAN D26 (D2676) engine.

Ratings

MAN publishes the D30 in six power steps. Its TGX specifications page gives them in a column headed “Performance [kW (PS)]”, in kilowatts with metric horsepower in brackets; MAN’s D30 page gives the same six steps in hp. The TGX specifications page gives no torque; MAN’s D30 page and its September 2024 release give it for the six steps together, as “2,100 to 2,800 Nm”.

Only one step has its own torque figure in the documents read: MAN’s release of 10 July 2026 gives the D30 in the TGX Truckers’ Edition “560 hp and 2,800 Nm of torque”. None of the documents gives the engine speeds at which power or torque are reached. How kilowatts, PS, hp and newton-metres relate is set out in reading truck power figures.

Combustion, injection and turbocharging

MAN’s D30 page says the D3066 “achieves a top fuel consumption of ≈ 169 g/kWh”, which it says corresponds to an efficiency of more than 50 percent, and lists the measures it gives for this: high combustion temperatures through the “deliberate elimination of cooled, regulated EGR (exhaust gas recirculation)”, a compression ratio of 23:1 and an ignition pressure of about 250 bar.

Fuel is injected by XPI common rail at an injection pressure of up to 1,800 bar through 10-hole injection nozzles, according to MAN’s September 2024 release, which also gives the turbocharging “two power range-dependent charging geometries”. The Trucker’s World story assigns those geometries by performance class: one for 380–440 hp and one for 480–560 hp.

Fuel, emission class and aftertreatment

MAN’s documents describe the D30 as a diesel engine. MAN’s D30 page gives its emission class as Euro 6e, and the engine table on MAN’s TGX specifications page ticks the D3066 under “Euro 6 emission standard”. What Euro 6e means on a truck spec sheet is set out in Euro VI and Euro 7.

Because the engine has no cooled EGR, MAN’s D30 page says, its raw NOx level is higher, and it uses “two SCR catalytic converters arranged one behind the other” to make the combustion Euro 6e-compliant: SCR stage 1 reduces a large proportion of the nitrogen oxides, and SCR stage 2 reduces the residual NOx to Euro 6e. The same page and the Trucker’s World story say the engine uses more AdBlue as a result. How SCR and AdBlue work is covered in SCR and AdBlue explained.

None of the MAN documents read for this page mentions HVO, other paraffinic fuels, biodiesel or a gas version of the D30. HVO itself is described in what is HVO fuel.

Engine brake and gearbox

MAN offers a Compression Release Brake (CRB) for the D30, which its D30 page rates at up to 355 kW of braking power. MAN describes it as using additional rocker arms, each of which opens an exhaust valve close to top dead centre in the compression stroke during braking, so that the compressed air escapes and the piston pumps instead of driving. MAN’s September 2024 release lists the CRB among the exclusive options for the D30 PowerLion driveline. Engine brakes of this type are explained in retarders and engine braking.

The engine comes with one gearbox. MAN’s September 2024 release says the new diesel engine “is always combined with the MAN TipMatic 14 gearbox”, and MAN’s D30 page describes the D30 PowerLion drive train as combining “the MAN D3066-Motor with the MAN TipMatic 14 gearbox” with aerodynamic measures.
