The D38 6x4 tractor is plated at 44 t against the 40 t of the 4x2 shown above. The D26 peaks at 2,650 Nm in its 397 kW step; MAN does not publish a torque range across the family, so none is shown. The 8x4/4 heavy-haulage tractor is a separate model rated to 250 t and is not covered by the figures above.
The TGX is MAN’s long-haul flagship and the top of the truck generation the company launched in February 2020 — its first wholly new range in two decades. Where the Actros L differentiates itself mainly through the cab, the TGX spreads its answer across an unusually wide engine programme.
Four engine families is the headline
Most competitors offer two or three. MAN offers four, and the spread is the point: D15 at 9 litres, D26 at 12.4, D30 at 12.7 and D38 at 15.2.
The D15 exists to save weight. At 243–294 kW it is not a long-haul engine in the classic sense; it is what you specify when payload matters more than reserve power and the truck rarely sees a mountain pass.
The D30, MAN’s “PowerLion”, is the efficiency centrepiece of the current range and spans 279–412 kW with 2,100–2,800 Nm. It is also the only engine that gets the 14-speed TipMatic rather than the 12-speed, which is a meaningful difference on gradients: more ratios means less time in the wrong one.
The D26 overlaps it at 324–397 kW and continues in the range alongside.
The D38 at 15.2 litres is the heavy end — 397–471 kW and 2,700–3,000 Nm at 1,800 rpm. This is the engine behind the 8x4/4 heavy-haulage tractor rated to 250 tonnes, which is a separate model rather than a TGX variant.
What we could not confirm
MAN publishes a peak torque figure for the D26 — 2,650 Nm in its 397 kW step — but not a range across the family, so this page does not show one. The rated speed for the D26 rested on a single 2022 bodybuilder document with no second source, and was dropped in verification. Those rows are blank on purpose.
Axles and weights
Five configurations: 4x2, 6x2 in two forms, 6x4 and 8x4. The gross combination figure shown here — 40 tonnes — belongs to the 4x2 tractor with the D26; the D38 6x4 is plated at 44 tonnes. As always with this class, the number follows the specification rather than the model name.
Buying used
The engine choice tells you most of what you need to know about how the truck was used. A D15 in a long-haul spec is a mismatch worth asking about; a D38 in regional distribution is a lot of engine to have paid for and to keep fed.
Ask which gearbox is fitted. The 14-speed came with the D30, and a 12-speed behind a D30 means an older or a differently specified truck. Service history around the emission system matters here as much as on any Euro 6 vehicle, and the air dryer and compressor are the components most likely to have been through a replacement cycle already.
