The Lion’s Intercity is MAN’s intercity bus. MAN’s brochure presents it for use “as an intercity coach, school or shuttle bus”, and its overview page for intercity, school and shuttle service. Three bodies carry the name: the Lion’s Intercity (R60) and the two longer Lion’s Intercity C bodies, the R61 and the R62. MAN’s bus menu lists the Lion’s Intercity beside the Lion’s Intercity LE, a low-entry model with pages of its own that is not covered here, and beside the Lion’s Coach and the Lion’s City.

This page is built from three MAN documents in English, all read on 26 October 2026: the Lion’s Intercity brochure footed “D112.596 · 09/2025”, with its technical data on page 11, and the Lion’s Intercity overview and technical-data pages on MAN’s global site. No document opened gives a launch date, an earlier generation, an emission class, a gross vehicle weight, axle loads, a wheel formula, the suspension, a tyre size, a tank volume, a standing-passenger figure, a door arrangement or a type-approval regulation.

MAN’s technical-data page gives the same three bodies with a length row of 12,280 mm, 13,050 mm and 13,254 mm, so the R61 is 13,054 mm long in the brochure and 13,050 mm on the page. The page prints the seat row as “Seat arrangement max.” with 55, 59 and 63, where the brochure prints “Up to 55 + 1”, “Up to 59 + 1” and “Up to 63 + 1”; neither document says what the “+ 1” seat is. The luggage figures, 5.4, 6.7 and 5.7 m³, are the same in both and are headed “Luggage capacity approx.” on the page. The overview page gives a different kind of figure: “a total luggage capacity of up to 6.4 m³ with its large luggage compartment and numerous storage options”.

Engines and gearboxes

Two six-cylinder in-line diesel engines with common rail are offered, both “vertically installed” in the brochure’s words and both with “Exhaust gas treatment with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)” on the technical-data page, the system described in SCR and AdBlue.

Engines and gearboxes as the 09/2025 brochure and the technical-data page give them.

Engine weight (page)approx. 680 kgapprox. 900 kg
Gearbox (brochure)6-speed automatic6-speed automatic or 12-speed automatic

The technical-data page heads the D15 “Powerhouse” and the D08 “Lightweight”. The brochure describes the bus as “Powered by a fuel-efficient 9-litre MAN D15 engine”, and the overview page sums up the programme as “Efficient engine technology with up to 360 HP”. The two specification documents disagree on one engine figure: the D08’s torque is 1,100 Nm in the brochure and 1,050–1,150 Nm on the technical-data page.

The brochure states that the Lion’s Intercity is “now also available with the nearly wear-free MAN EfficientHybrid start-stop system” and, in the same sentence, that the bus “reduces fuel consumption and lowers environmental impact”. The technical-data page lists the system’s functions as “Intelligent energy management with automatic start-stop system”, “Recovers energy during braking” and “Enables electric start”.

Brakes and stability systems

All three bodies have an EBS brake system with disc brakes on all wheels. The brochure describes “a comprehensive package of standard safety systems”: the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the Electronic Braking System (EBS) Plus with integrated ABS, traction control (ASR) for slippery surfaces, and hazard warning lights that switch on automatically during emergency braking. MAN BrakeMatic holds a speed set by the cruise control or with the brake pedal when driving downhill “by automatically controlling the continuous brakes accordingly”, continuous brakes of the kind described in retarders and engine braking. The overview page credits the bus with “roll-over strength”; how a bus body’s rollover strength is tested is set out in UN Regulation No 66.

Driver-assistance systems

The brochure describes the following assistance systems and marks Adaptive Cruise Control, the Lane Guard System, Emergency Brake Assist Plus and the MAN Driver Monitoring System “Within the limits of the system”:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) adapts the vehicle speed and the distance from the vehicle in front within predefined settings.
  • Lane Guard System uses camera technology; an acoustic signal sounds if the bus touches the lane marking or leaves the driving line without indicating.
  • MAN BrakeMatic controls the continuous brakes on downhill runs, as above.
  • Turn Assist is “The radar-based system with active warning”, warning visually and acoustically of road users beside the vehicle or directly in front of it.
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) Plus warns the driver in emergency braking situations and, if the driver does not react, initiates emergency braking; the ESS (Emergency Stopping Signal) is activated in addition to the brake lights, and the hazard warning lights come on.
  • MAN SafeStop Assist stops the bus in a controlled manner if the driver suddenly becomes incapacitated, for example in a medical emergency.
  • MAN Driver Monitoring System (DMS) detects the first signs of lack of concentration and overtiredness and warns the driver with a visual and acoustic signal.

The technical-data page lists MAN OptiView as well, a digital mirror replacement system in which “Digital exterior cameras replace the mirror arms”, with displays that adjust to the ambient brightness; MAN Traffic Sign Detection, which also warns the driver when speeding; and MAN Lane Change Support, which monitors the areas to the left and right of the bus with a “3-stage warning through LED modules in the A-pillars”. On the same page, Turn Assist monitors the co-driver’s side with a “3-stage warning through an LED band in the A-pillar”. The systems EU law requires on new buses are listed in mandatory driver assistance systems.

Driver’s workplace

The overview page describes a fully digital, high-resolution 12-inch driver’s display showing vehicle and engine speed, navigation, media and assistance system messages, operated through the multifunction steering wheel, which the page calls optional, or through the left drop arm on buses without it. The optional MMC (MAN Media Coach) Advanced media system has “A separate 7-inch media display in the driverʼs side viewing area” and is controlled via a classic control panel, the multifunction steering wheel or by voice command; the page also names MAN SmartSelect there, against a footnote whose text in the page’s disclaimer reads “Not with MAN Lion’s Intercity”.

The page lists the elements of the driver’s workplace: storage and stowage compartments, an ergonomic driver’s seat, the “Infotainment system Multimedia Coach (MMC) with navigation and large colour display”, the multifunction steering wheel, a cup and bottle holder, 12 V and 24 V sockets, heatable exterior mirrors, a manual or electric driver’s roller blind, a radio remote control for the door, a “Refrigerator in the front with a capacity of 41 l” and preparation for a cash register or ticket printer.

Passenger area and equipment

The overview page describes ample window areas and two glass roof hatches, separately controlled interior lighting and curtains. MAN says the air-conditioning system “saves not only 66 kg in weight” and operates quietly; the brochure states that it contains fluorinated greenhouse gases, “R134a / GWP 1430 with up to 1.15 kg; 1.6445 t CO2 accordingly”.

MAN describes a modular system for configuring the bus as an intercity, school or shuttle bus. The brochure names a change platform, a wheelchair lift, luggage racks and a travel guide seat among the options. School use is the subject of school transport vehicles, and wheelchair access of bus accessibility.

Body design

The overview page describes roof arches; a curved, slightly inclined panoramic windscreen and a rear separation edge, which MAN says improve aerodynamics; and a front with the black trim, MAN lettering and chrome bar with lion emblem of MAN’s bus family. A narrow A-pillar sits beside the windscreen. The page also names powerfully modelled wheel cutouts and smooth surfaces; at the rear, a flap with a large, flat surface, a three-part rear bumper and a rear window with lightline and concave window line.

Source notes

The figures above are the Lion’s Intercity (R60), 12,280 mm long. MAN’s 09/2025 brochure gives two more bodies under the name Lion’s Intercity C: the R61 at 13,054 mm on a 6,774 mm wheelbase with a 22,860 mm turning circle, and the R62 at 13,254 mm on a 6,974 mm wheelbase with a 23,380 mm turning circle. All three are 2,550 mm wide and 3,400 mm high with air conditioning, and all three have an EBS brake system with disc brakes on all wheels. Seats are “Up to 55 + 1”, “Up to 59 + 1” and “Up to 63 + 1” in the brochure and 55, 59 and 63 as “Seat arrangement max.” on the technical-data page; luggage compartments are 5.4, 6.7 and 5.7 m³ in both. The technical-data page gives the R61 as 13,050 mm long, against 13,054 mm in the brochure. The overview page gives “a total luggage capacity of up to 6.4 m³” for the luggage compartment and storage options together. Two six-cylinder common-rail diesel engines are offered. The D0836 LOH (D08) has 6,867 cm³ and 213 kW (290 hp); its torque is 1,100 Nm in the brochure and 1,050-1,150 Nm on the technical-data page. The D1556 LOH (D15) has 9,037 cm³ and 206, 243 or 265 kW (280, 330 or 360 hp) with 1,200, 1,400 or 1,600 Nm. The technical-data page gives the engines approximate weights of 680 kg (D08) and 900 kg (D15) and SCR exhaust gas treatment for both. The brochure pairs the D0836 LOH with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and the D1556 LOH with a 6-speed or a 12-speed automatic gearbox. No document opened gives a launch date, an earlier generation, an emission class, a gross vehicle weight, axle loads, a wheel formula, the suspension, a tyre size, a tank volume, a standing-passenger figure or a door arrangement. The Lion’s Intercity LE is a separate model with pages of its own on man.eu and is not covered here.
