MAN D08 (D0834, D0836) engine: displacement, ratings and versions
The MAN D08 family: the 4.6-litre four-cylinder D0834 and the 6.9-litre six-cylinder D0836 diesel, their Euro 6e and Euro 5 ratings and the MAN models that use them.

The MAN D08 is a family of in-line diesel engines from MAN Truck & Bus in two sizes: the four-cylinder D0834 of 4.6 litres and the six-cylinder D0836 of 6.9 litres, both with a bore of 108 mm and a stroke of 125 mm. MAN’s On-Road brochure lists them in Euro 6e and Euro 5 versions, the D0834 from 118 to 162 kW and the D0836 from 184 to 235 kW, and MAN fits them to its TGL and TGM trucks and its Lion’s Intercity bus. On this site the D08 is one of the engines of the MAN TGL, MAN TGM and MAN Lion’s Intercity.
Status as of 26 October 2026. Read that day: the MAN Engines brochure On-Road Engines and Components, the MAN Engines product pages for construction and special machinery and for agricultural machinery, MAN’s TGM and TGL specification pages for the global and the Middle East and Africa markets, and the MAN Lion’s Intercity technical data page. All six are the maker’s own documents.
Maker, codes and layout
The On-Road brochure comes from MAN Engines and Components, which it describes as a business unit of MAN Truck and Bus; it says that MAN offers its engines, axles and transfer cases “exclusively to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)”. In its overview of diesel engines for special-purpose vehicles the first two columns are the D0834 and the D0836; in its overview of engines for buses the D0836 appears again. The engine tables give the D0834 as “IL4” with 4.6 l and the D0836 as “IL6” with 6.9 l.
The brochure’s key to its tables reads “D = Diesel engine”, “L = with exhaust turbocharging and intercooling”, “F = front installation” and “IL = in-line”; for the bus engines it adds “O = for buses” and “H = rear installation”. The full engine models in its tables are the D0834 LFL AS, LFL AR and LFL AQ (Euro 6e) and LFL 83, LFL 84 and LFL 85 (Euro 5); the D0836 LFL BK, LFL BJ and LFL BI (Euro 6e) and LFL 86, LFL 87 and LFL 88 (Euro 5); and, for buses, the D0836 LOH 90 and LOH 91 (Euro 6e). The brochure does not explain every letter or the numbering of these codes.
MAN Engines’ pages for construction and agricultural machinery describe the D0834 as “4 cylinders. 4.6 litres displacement” and the D0836 as “6 cylinders. 6.9 litres displacement”, each with “Bore 108 mm, stroke 125 mm”. MAN’s TGM and TGL specification page gives them as “4 in-line” and “6 in-line”. The family name D08 is the one the MAN Lion’s Intercity technical data page uses; it describes its “MAN D08 engine” as a “6-cylinder in-line diesel engine”, a “Common rail engine” with “6.9 litres displacement” and “approx. 680 kg weight”.
Versions and dates
The documents read name four emission versions of the D08, all of them listed on 26 October 2026. None of them gives a date of introduction for the family, for a version or for a change from one version to the next.

The brochure notes that SCRT is a registered trademark of HJS Emission Technology GmbH and Johnson Matthey PLC. The MAN Lion’s Intercity page gives its D08’s “Exhaust gas treatment with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)”; what EU rules require an SCR system using AdBlue to monitor is set out in SCR and AdBlue explained. The steps of Euro VI, and why spec sheets write them as Euro 6e, are covered in Euro VI and Euro 7.
For off-road machines, MAN Engines’ construction machinery page says of its engines for construction machinery in general that “The availability of emission standards ranging from US Tier 4 to EU Stage V” lets manufacturers sell their machines around the world; it does not say which standard each D08 version meets.
Fuels
MAN lists the D0834 and the D0836 among its diesel engines in the On-Road brochure, and the Lion’s Intercity page calls its D08 a diesel engine. None of the documents read lists a gas version of the D08 or names any other fuel for it.
Ratings
The brochure gives each engine model’s nominal rating in kW (hp) at a stated engine speed and its maximum torque in Nm across a band of engine speeds. Its overview adds: “Alternative engines without torque reduction or emission standard on demand.” How kilowatts, horsepower and newton-metres relate is explained in reading truck power figures.
D0834
The brochure lists the same three ratings in its Euro 6e and its Euro 5 columns, all at 2,300 rpm.
| Engine model | Emission version | Nominal rating, kW (hp) at rpm | Maximum torque, Nm at rpm |

The brochure names fire fighting vehicles, road sweepers, truck modification and all terrain vehicles as typical applications of its engines for special-purpose vehicles, and midi buses, city buses, intercity buses, coaches and airport buses for its bus engines; how fire appliances are built on truck chassis is covered in fire engines on truck chassis.
In MAN’s TGL and TGM
MAN’s TGM and TGL specification page lists six D08 ratings and the vehicle series each is listed for. Its Middle East and Africa version lists the same six ratings and series, with “Euro 4 and Euro 5” in place of the Euro 6 mark.

Off-road versions
MAN Engines’ pages for construction and special machinery and for agricultural machinery list the D0834 with “Power 118 – 162 kW”, 160 – 220 HP, and the D0836 with “Power 184 – 235 kW”, 250 – 320 HP. Neither page gives the torque or the emission version of the individual D08 ratings.

Quick answers
- What is the displacement of the MAN D08 engine?
- The D08 family has two sizes. The D0834 is a four-cylinder in-line engine of 4.6 litres and the D0836 a six-cylinder in-line engine of 6.9 litres. MAN Engines' construction and agricultural machinery pages give both with a bore of 108 mm and a stroke of 125 mm.
- How much power does the MAN D08 have?
- MAN's On-Road brochure lists the D0834 at 118 kW (160 hp), 140 kW (190 hp) and 162 kW (220 hp) at 2,300 rpm, with 600, 750 and 850 Nm, in both Euro 6e and Euro 5 versions. It lists the D0836 for special-purpose vehicles at 184 kW (250 hp), 213 kW (290 hp) and 235 kW (320 hp), with 1,050 to 1,250 Nm, and the D0836 for buses at 184 kW (250 hp) with 1,050 Nm and 213 kW (290 hp) with 1,150 Nm, both at 2,200 rpm.
- Which trucks and buses use the MAN D08?
- MAN's TGM and TGL specification page lists the D0834 for the MAN TGL, the 184 kW D0836 for the TGM and TGL, and the 213 kW and 235 kW D0836 for the TGM. The MAN Lion's Intercity technical data page lists a 213 kW D08. On this site the MAN TGL, MAN TGM and MAN Lion's Intercity pages list it among their engines.
- Which emission standard does the MAN D08 meet?
- It depends on the document and the market. MAN's On-Road brochure lists Euro 6e versions, with SCRT exhaust aftertreatment, and Euro 5 versions, with SCR only. MAN's global TGM and TGL specification page marks both D08 engines for the Euro 6 emission standard, and its Middle East and Africa page gives them as Euro 4 and Euro 5. None of these documents gives a date for any of these versions.
