The Volvo D5K is Volvo’s 5.1-litre diesel engine with four cylinders in line, introduced for Euro 6. Volvo Trucks’ fact sheets of 26 June 2013 describe the D5K210, EU6SCR and the D5K240, EU6SCR as “an in-line four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 5.1 litres, equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler”, and say that the engine meets the Euro 6 standards. Volvo Buses announced the engine as its Euro 6 5-litre “D5” on 19 September 2012, for its hybrid buses and the B5TL double-decker; AB Volvo announced it for the Volvo FL truck on 14 May 2013, at 210 and 240 hp, and its release of 28 May 2013 put the start of sales in June 2013.

Status as of 26 October 2026. Volvo Trucks’ D5K210 and D5K240 fact sheets (Version 01, 26 June 2013), Volvo Trucks’ undated Volvo FL product guide, the Volvo releases of 5 July 2012, 14 May 2013 and 28 May 2013, and Volvo Buses’ releases of 19 September 2012, 2 October 2013 and 18 October 2013 were read on 26 October 2026. Figures are given as Volvo gives them: power in hp, with kilowatts in brackets where Volvo adds them, and torque in Nm. How the units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.

What the D5K is

The code appears in Volvo’s type designations “D5K210, EU6SCR” and “D5K240, EU6SCR”, where the number matches the engine’s horsepower, 210 hp and 240 hp. Volvo’s press releases of 2012 and 2013 mostly call the engine “D5”. AB Volvo’s release of 14 May 2013 says: “The Volvo FL is also available with the compact 4-cylinder D5 engine. It has a displacement of 5.1 litres and comes with power outputs of 240 hp and 210 hp.” Volvo Bus United Kingdom & Ireland’s release of 2 October 2013 uses the full code: “The new engine is a D5K 4 cylinder 5.1 litre Euro 6 engine”.

The fact sheets describe the construction: a single cylinder head with an overhead camshaft that operates four valves per cylinder via rocker arms; a cast-iron cylinder block and cylinder head with dry cylinder liners; electronic engine control; and common-rail fuel injection at a pressure of 2000 bar. The turbocharger is a VGT (Variable Geometry Turbine) unit, and the sheets list an electronically controlled, water-cooled EGR valve. The Volvo FL product guide gives the same injection pressure: “The high-pressure electronic injection is provided by common rail, with a maximum pressure of 2000 bar.” The table gives the base data; the ratings follow further down.

Fuels

The D5K is a diesel engine; the Volvo FL product guide lists both ratings under the heading “DIESEL AND HVO”. The documents read for this page name no gas-fuelled version.

HVO. The product guide says: “All versions of the D5K engines are certified for synthetic diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oils – HVO EN15940).” What HVO is, and what the EN 15940 standard covers, is set out in What is HVO? Renewable diesel in trucks and buses.

Biodiesel (B100). The same guide says: “There is a variant of our D5K240 engine that will run on pure biodiesel (rapeseed oil methyl esters – RME B100).” For buses, Volvo Buses’ release of 19 September 2012 lists the D5 at “240 hp 900 Nm (also available in biodiesel version)”, and its release of 18 October 2013 says: “Both the 5-liter engine and the 8-liter engine are available for conventional diesel fuel and for biodiesel.”

Emission class and exhaust aftertreatment

Both fact sheets say that the engine “meets the EU exhaust emissions requirements according to the Euro 6 standards”. Neither names a Euro VI step; the steps and their dates are explained in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks.

The sheets describe the aftertreatment in order. It starts in the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), continues in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and then in the “mixing zone/Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR)”, where the exhaust is sprayed with AdBlue; at the final step an Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC) removes any remaining ammonia. The sheets link the electronically controlled, water-cooled EGR valve to the temperature of the exhaust gases before they enter the after-treatment system (EATS). How SCR and AdBlue work, and what the law makes the system detect, is set out in SCR and AdBlue.

Volvo described the same combination when the engine was launched. AB Volvo’s release of 14 May 2013 quotes Ruddy Houtmeyers, Strategic Product Manager for Medium Duty Vehicles at Volvo Trucks: “The technological solution for meeting the Euro 6 demands is a combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and variable turbo geometry, a cooled EGR system and a particulate filter”. The release of 28 May 2013 says: “The technological solution for the D5 and D8 engines is a combination of cooled EGR system, particulate filter and SCR.” For buses, Volvo Buses’ release of 18 October 2013 says that “Volvo D5 and D8 also have EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)”.

Versions and generations

Announcement for buses (19 September 2012). Volvo Buses launched a Euro 6 range of 5-, 8- and 11-litre engines. The release presents the D5 as a diesel engine for Volvo’s hybrid driveline at 240 hp, and says that “This engine will also be used in the new hybrid articulated bus that Volvo will be launching with Euro 6” and in the B5TL double-decker, “which is being launched in the UK later this autumn”. It says that “The new engines will be available on the market in the second half of 2013”, and names the Volvo 7900 Hybrid and the Volvo 7900 Hybrid articulated bus among the city buses for the new engines.

Euro 6 for the Volvo FL (May and June 2013). Volvo Trucks’ release of 5 July 2012, on its first Euro 6 engine, a D13, quoted Mats Franzén, Manager of Engine Strategy and Planning at Volvo Trucks: “The rest of the Euro 6 engine range will be launched well before the requirements become obligatory on January 1, 2014”. On 14 May 2013 AB Volvo announced the D5 for the Volvo FL at 210 and 240 hp, and on 28 May 2013 it said: “In June 2013, sales of the new D5, D8, D11 and D13 engines will get under way.”

Fact sheets (26 June 2013). The D5K210, EU6SCR and D5K240, EU6SCR sheets are dated 2013-06-26 and marked “Version 01”.

Bus models (October 2013). Volvo Bus United Kingdom & Ireland’s release of 2 October 2013 names the D5K as the engine of the new Euro 6 B5TL diesel double-decker. On 18 October 2013 Volvo Buses wrote that it “has now switched all of the model series in Europe to the upcoming Euro 6 emissions standard”, that all hybrid buses had received a 5-litre engine with 240 hp, and that the 5-litre engine would also replace the 9-litre engine in its diesel double-decker. Its engine list reads: “Volvo D5 for Volvo’s hybrid buses and double-deckers.”

Volvo FL product guide (undated). The guide carries no date; it describes the Volvo FL Electric with “Sales start in 2019”. It lists the D5K210 and D5K240 under “DIESEL AND HVO”, together with the HVO certification and the RME B100 variant of the D5K240 described above.

The documents read for this page give no earlier or later generation of the D5K.

The three bus releases give the 240 hp bus engine three torque figures, 900, 918 and 950 Nm, and the B5TL release gives maximum power at 1900 rpm where the truck documents give 2200 r/min; the documents read do not explain the differences. The 2012 release also writes the bus output as “240 hp (215 hp)” without saying what the bracketed figure refers to.

Both fact sheets also list an exhaust brake output (EBR-EPG) of 80 kW at 2800 rpm. For the Volvo FL, the product guide names two systems, an exhaust brake or an exhaust brake in combination with a compression brake, and gives no output figure for either. What an engine brake is, and how the law groups it with retarders, is explained in What is a retarder?
