ProCabin extends the front of the cab by 80 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,100 rpm across the range. Top Torque adds a further 200 Nm in twelfth gear. Heavy-haulage variants are rated to 180 t, 250 t or 500 t with the optional heavy-duty coupling.

The Actros L is the top of the Mercedes-Benz heavy truck range: the long-haul flagship, launched in June 2021 and given a substantially reworked cab — ProCabin — that entered production in December 2024. It is not a separate model from the Actros so much as its premium specification, and most of what distinguishes it lives in the cab and the aerodynamics rather than under the floor.

Which engine, and why there are three

The single most useful thing to understand about this truck is that “Actros L” does not describe one powertrain. Mercedes sells it with three engine families, and they are aimed at genuinely different jobs.

The OM 470 is the 10.7-litre. It is the light option, and it exists because a tractor that rarely runs at 40 tonnes does not need to carry the weight of a bigger block. On regional work and lighter long-haul it saves both mass and money.

The OM 471 at 12.8 litres is the volume seller and, for most operators, the default. Mercedes introduced a third generation of it in 2022 and made it the efficiency centrepiece of the ProCabin launch. If you are running standard European long-haul at 40 tonnes, this is almost certainly the engine.

The OM 473, 15.6 litres, is the heavy-haulage answer. You take it when gross combination weight or sustained gradients make torque the binding constraint rather than fuel.

Across all three, peak torque arrives at 1,100 rpm, and Top Torque adds a further 200 Nm in twelfth gear — a detail that matters more than its size suggests, because it lets the truck hold a high gear on a gradient instead of dropping down and losing momentum.

Axle configurations: matching the truck to the work

Seven configurations are offered on the standard range, and the notation is worth decoding because it is where buying mistakes happen.

A 4×2 is the classic two-axle tractor: lightest, cheapest to run, and right for anything that stays on made roads at normal weights. The 6×2 family adds a third axle for payload or for statutory axle-load limits, and the suffixes describe what that axle does — a liftable leading axle, a trailing axle, a steered one. The 6×4 drives both rear axles, which you need for traction on site or for heavy combinations, and pay for in weight and fuel.

Above that sit the heavy-haulage variants, which add an 8×4/4 VLA and are rated to 180, 250 or 500 tonnes depending on coupling. Those are specialist machines and priced accordingly.

The cab, which is the actual point

If the powertrain is shared with the wider Actros range, the cab is what the L badge buys. ProCabin extends the front by 80 millimetres, and Mercedes credits the aerodynamic work with up to 3% fuel saving — a figure worth treating as a best case, measured under favourable conditions, but directionally real.

For a driver spending nights in the vehicle, the flat floor and standing height of the larger cab variants are not a luxury item; they are the difference between a truck people will stay in and one they leave. On a long-haul fleet where driver retention is the binding constraint, that argument usually wins before the fuel argument is even made.

Who it is right for

The Actros L makes sense for international long-haul at high annual mileage, where fuel is the dominant cost line and the aerodynamic and powertrain work pays back, and for fleets competing for drivers, where the cab is a recruitment tool.

It makes less sense for short-radius distribution: you are paying for long-distance capability and cab space that a truck doing multi-drop urban work never uses. For that, the shorter cabs in the wider Actros range cost less and manoeuvre better.

What to check on a used one

The mileage on a long-haul tractor tells you less than the duty cycle behind it. A truck that has done 600,000 kilometres of steady motorway running is in a very different condition from one with the same figure accumulated on stop-start regional work, and the service record is the only reliable way to tell them apart.

Check that the emission system’s history is complete. On any Euro VI truck the aftertreatment is the expensive part to put right, and gaps in the record around it are worth pricing in. Ask specifically what generation of OM 471 is fitted if the truck is from the 2022 transition period — the third generation was the efficiency step, and the two are not interchangeable in what they cost to run.

The air compressor and dryer are the components most likely to have been replaced already at high mileage; their condition is a fair proxy for how the whole air system has been treated.

Where it sits against its rivals

Against the MAN TGX the Actros L is generally the more expensive purchase and the stronger residual. Against the Volvo FH the comparison is closest — both are premium long-haul tractors with strong cabs, and the decision usually comes down to dealer network and the operator’s existing fleet rather than the vehicles. The Scania S-series competes hardest on driveline efficiency.

For a fleet, the honest answer is that all four are good enough that the deciding factor is service coverage on your routes, not the specification sheet.
