The Tourliner is the touring coach that MAN Truck & Bus sells under its NEOPLAN brand. MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 calls it an “Attractive entry-level model into the NEOPLAN world”, dates the launch of the first generation to 2003 and the presentation of the current, second generation to 2016, and says that all NEOPLAN models are built today at MAN’s bus plant in Ankara. Neoplan lists four models on two or three axles. Its documents name the MAN D2676 LOH engine and the MAN TipMatic Coach gearbox, designations that MAN’s documents also give for the MAN Lion’s Coach.
The figures below come from the Tourliner brochure in its September 2023 edition, in English and German (edition codes Tour_0923_en and Tour_0923_de), and from the technical-data table on Neoplan’s English, German and Turkish Tourliner pages, all read on 7 October 2026. Where a statement comes from Neoplan’s assistance-systems pages, its seat brochure of November 2021 (Com_1121_e), its Hall of Fame page or a MAN Truck & Bus press release, the text names it.
Four models
| Row | Tourliner | Tourliner C (two axles) | Tourliner C (three axles) | Tourliner L |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Axles | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| Length | 12,113 mm | 13,103 mm | 13,373 mm | 13,913 mm |
| Wheelbase | 6,060 mm | 7,050 mm | 6,060 mm | 6,600 mm |
| Turning circle | 21,020 mm | 24,498 mm | 21,010 mm (brochure); 21,020 mm (model pages) | 22,318 mm |
| Seating spaces | up to 53 | up to 59 | up to 57 | up to 63 |
| Luggage compartment volume | up to 12 m³ | up to 13 m³ | up to 12 m³ | up to 13 m³ |
All four are 2,550 mm wide and 3,870 mm high including the air-conditioning unit. The brochure gives each of them a front overhang of 2,755 mm and a rear overhang of 3,298 mm, a standing height of 2,000 mm in the centre aisle and a “central aisle height” of 1,494 mm. The three-axle columns print one wheelbase each, 6,060 mm and 6,600 mm, and no distance from the drive axle to the trailing axle. The rows of a coach data sheet are explained in coach specifications explained.
MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 gives the four as 12.1, 13.1, 13.4 and 13.9 metres long with the same seat maxima of 53, 59, 57 and 63, describes the two-axle Tourliner C as “optimised, in particular, for maximum seating”, and says that this “extra-long two-axle vehicle followed as the latest addition to the family at the Busworld 2017”. In Great Britain, MAN Truck & Bus UK’s release of 20 June 2023 calls a 13.1-metre two-axle coach a “Tourliner P10” and a 13.4-metre three-axle coach a “Tourliner P20”.
Engine
| Models | Rated output | Maximum torque |
|---|---|---|
| Tourliner, Tourliner C (two axles) | 324 kW (440 hp) at 1,800 rpm | 2,250 Nm at 930–1,350 rpm |
| Tourliner, Tourliner C (two axles) | 353 kW (480 hp) at 1,800 rpm | 2,450 Nm at 930–1,350 rpm |
| Tourliner C (three axles), Tourliner L | 353 kW (480 hp) at 1,800 rpm | 2,450 Nm at 930–1,350 rpm |
| Tourliner C (three axles), Tourliner L | 382 kW (520 hp) at 1,800 rpm | 2,650 Nm at 930–1,350 rpm |
Neoplan’s model page calls the engine “the new MAN D26 common-rail engine”, a six-cylinder in-line unit, and names its exhaust treatment as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) combined with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The two two-axle models take the 324 kW and 353 kW steps and the two three-axle models the 353 kW and 382 kW steps, so 382 kW and 2,650 Nm appear in no two-axle column. The kW and Nm figures are the same in all five Neoplan documents; the horsepower labels are not. The English model page prints “324 kW (510 HP)” and “353 kW (290 HP)” in its table, while the German and Turkish pages and both brochures print 440 and 480 hp against the same kW figures.
Neoplan’s model pages give the emission class as “Euro 6”, and no Neoplan document names a sub-step. MAN’s press releases about coaches for particular operators do. The release of 8 July 2020, on 29 two-axle Tourliners for the Hungarian operator Volánbusz, describes “a highly efficient D26 engine with 470 hp (346 kW), which meets the requirements of the Euro 6d emissions standard”. MAN Truck & Bus UK’s release of 20 June 2023 describes “the MAN Euro6e D26 six-cylinder 12.4 litre in-line engine” at 430 bhp (316 kW) and 2,200 Nm in a 13.1-metre P10, and at 510 bhp (375 kW) and 2,600 Nm in a 13.4-metre P20; neither output appears in Neoplan’s tables. MAN’s release of 6 October 2023, on the model-year-2024 Lion’s Coach shown at Busworld Europe, says that the new MAN D26 coach engine “in Euro 6e exhaust quality” gained ten hp and around 50 Nm at peak while using up to 2.5 per cent less fuel overall; the Tourliner brochure of September 2023 refers to “the new D26 engine”. The Euro steps are set out in Euro 6 and Euro 7 explained.
Gearboxes
Two gearboxes are listed for all four models. The first is the MAN TipMatic Coach, which the brochure calls an “automated 12-speed manual transmission” with “Easy-Start” and the English model page an “automated 12-speed manually operated gearbox with EasyStart”; the German documents print automatisiertes 12-Gang-Schaltgetriebe mit EasyStart. The second is a six-speed automatic gearbox. On the two three-axle models the brochure marks it “(only with 480 hp)” and the model page “(only for 480 HP)”; the brochure prints 480 hp against 353 kW. The difference between the two kinds of gearbox is set out in automated manual transmissions.
No Neoplan document names the maker of the six-speed automatic. The UK release of 20 June 2023 names a “ZF EcoLife 6-speed automatic gearbox” in the P10 it describes and a “MAN TipMatic® automated ZF TraXon 12-speed gearbox” in the P20.
Neoplan’s EfficientCruise page describes MAN EfficientCruise as a GPS-assisted cruise control that detects gradients up to three kilometres ahead and adjusts gear and speed, with four speed-tolerance levels (ECO Level I to IIII), and EfficientRoll as shifting the transmission to neutral on slight downhill gradients where that saves fuel. MAN’s release of 6 October 2023 says that the further-developed EfficientCruise 3 “is optionally available for coaches of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands”.
Axles, suspension and brakes
The brochure gives the same running gear to all four models: a multi-link front axle with independent wheel suspension and stabiliser, and a MAN hypoid rear axle with four location arms. The two three-axle models add a trailing axle, printed as a “rigid axle with longitudinal links and wishbones” in the brochure and a “rigid axle with trailing arm and wishbone” on the English model page. The braking system is listed as “EBS with inner ventilated brake discs, ESP, MSC and Brake Assist System”. The brochure’s systems page adds CDS, Comfort Drive Suspension, an electronically controlled suspension; Neoplan’s German Tourliner page describes its electronically controlled dampers adapting the firmness of the damping to changing load and driving conditions within milliseconds.
No Tourliner table lists a retarder, but Neoplan’s MAN BrakeMatic page describes the system holding a set downhill speed “by operating the standard intarder respectivly retarder”. It sets the sustained-action braking speed 2 km/h above the cruise-control speed, and under Maximum Speed Control (MSC) it engages the sustained-action brakes when the maximum permissible speed of 100 km/h is reached. Neoplan’s adaptive cruise control page likewise names the “retarder and service brake” among the brakes it controls. No Neoplan document opened gives a retarder rating. How retarders and engine brakes work is covered in retarders and engine braking.
Neoplan’s TyreManagement page pairs tyre pressure monitoring, with “Automatic warnings when the set pressure drops below 20 percent and 40 percent”, with a tyre repair kit used in place of a spare wheel, which the page says saves around 100 kg. No Neoplan or MAN document opened gives a permissible total weight, a kerb weight, an axle load, a tyre size, or a fuel or AdBlue tank volume for the current Tourliner.
Safety and driver-assistance systems
The September 2023 brochure lists nineteen “systems that stand for safety”: the electric parking brake (EPB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the Anti-Slip Regulator (ASR), CDS, the Electronic Braking System (EBS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), MAN BrakeMatic, MAN EfficientCruise with MAN EfficientRoll, Maximum Speed Control (MSC), Roll Over Prevention (ROP), MAN AttentionGuard, MAN OptiView, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Lane Return Assist (LRA), MAN Turn Assist, Traffic Jam Assist and High Beam Assist. Neoplan’s assistance-systems pages tag eighteen systems for the Tourliner, among them Emergency Brake Assist EBA Plus, a camera-based turn assist with pedestrian detection, Traffic Sign Detection, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and SafeStop Assist, which the brochure’s list does not include. Neither the brochure’s list nor the overview page marks any system standard or optional; of the system pages, the Lane Return Assist page calls that system “optional”, and the emergency brake page calls Emergency Brake Assist standard where new-vehicle rules require it.
The system pages describe each one. Adaptive Cruise Control works from 25 km/h with a radar range of about 150 m and acts on the engine torque, the retarder and the service brake. The Lane Guard System warns from 60 km/h, and AttentionGuard, built on it, shows a message suggesting a break for around ten seconds, with an audible and an optional haptic signal, when the lane position over time points to fatigue, at speeds above 60 km/h. The optional Lane Return Assist watches the lane markings from 60 km/h and steers the coach back through the electronically controlled MAN Comfort Steering. Lane Change Support monitors the sides by radar from 50 km/h, about 8 metres to the front, 80 metres to the rear and 4.5 metres to the side, and warns in three stages through LED modules on the A-pillar. The radar Turn Assist covers almost 180° on the co-driver’s side and warns in three stages below 30 km/h; the camera-based turn assist uses one camera on the windscreen and one on the right-hand side, detects pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, and also reads traffic signs. Traffic Jam Assist can be switched on up to 40 km/h and stays active up to 60 km/h, braking to a standstill and moving off again after short stops. Traffic Sign Detection warns of speeding with a tolerance that can be set in the vehicle menu from 0 to 3 km/h.
Emergency Brake Assist combines a front radar with the windscreen camera and sets off the Emergency Stopping Signal, a fast-flashing hazard warning, when it brakes. Neoplan’s page states that this system “comes standard on all NEOPLAN vehicles subject to mandatory specification requirements for new vehicles effective from November 2015” and “already complies with stricter EU requirements applicable from November 2018”; EBA Plus is described as warning the driver and braking automatically to protect vulnerable road users. MAN’s release of 3 October 2025 says that SafeStop Assist “has been available” for the NEOPLAN Tourliner “since the 2024 model year”; Neoplan’s SafeStop page describes three warning stages, the last bringing the coach to a standstill, switching on the hazard lights, selecting neutral, applying the electronic parking brake and switching on the interior lighting. MAN OptiView replaces the exterior mirrors with a close-range and a wide-angle camera on each side and two displays in the cockpit, and MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 calls it “The world’s first mirror replacement system for coaches”, introduced in 2018. The EU rules behind several of these systems are covered in mandatory driver assistance systems.
Cockpit
Neoplan’s model page and the brochure describe a 12-inch digital driver’s display, a 7-inch media display and a multifunction steering wheel adjustable for height and tilt. The media system is MMC (MAN Media Coach) Advanced, which the model page says is controlled through a classic control panel, the multifunction steering wheel, SmartSelect or by voice. SmartSelect is a rotary/push-button control with an integrated touchpad and a thumb-ball support.
MAN’s release of 13 October 2023 describes a new digital cockpit “for all MAN and NEOPLAN buses” in the 2024 model year, built on “a newly developed electronics platform for the bus portfolio”, with a 12-inch colour display that doubles the display area of its predecessor and a MAN SmartSelect control that “has never been installed in a bus before”. The release reports that this cockpit received the Busworld Digital Award in the category “Digital On-Board Comfort” in Brussels on 11 October 2023.
Passenger area, seats and accessibility
The brochure describes a “level, platform-free floor, a wheelchair lift as well as two wheelchair spaces”; MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 describes the lift as optional and placed “above the front or rear axle”. Neoplan’s model page lists USB charging stations at every seat and full LED lighting, and the brochure lists service sets with individual ventilation and indirect LED lighting throughout. The September 2023 release says the second generation received further interior enhancements “over the course of the following years” and names the most important of them: a floor in boat-deck look, chrome handrails and backlit elements on the luggage racks. Further options come from the NEOPLAN Individual range. Accessibility requirements for coaches are covered in bus accessibility.
Neoplan’s seat brochure of November 2021 marks the PremiumLine EcoPlus seat standard on the Tourliner, and the PremiumLine Business, PremiumLine First, Allido, Boresco, Creolo, Dorado, Erino and Erino Plus seats optional. The Tourliner brochure’s air-conditioning note states that the air-conditioning system and the refrigerator contain fluorinated greenhouse gases (R134a, GWP 1430) of up to 1.15 kg, equivalent to 1.6445 t CO2.
Exterior
Neoplan’s model page describes the body in its “Sharp Cut-Design”, with full-LED headlights in a black trim and a ring-shaped LED daytime running light it calls “Angel Eyes”. MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 says the aerodynamic design of the second generation was revamped “to achieve improvements of around 20 per cent”; the release of 8 July 2020 says the new exterior design “has once again improved its aerodynamics by more than 20 percent in comparison to the previous model”. The 2020 release also records that MAN showed the Tourliner at Busworld 2019 with the B-pillar in an optimised position, “in order to provide an improved view from the first row of seats”. Neoplan’s Hall of Fame lists two awards for the Tourliner: the IBC Award of 2015, which it describes as the IBC Comfort Award won by the Tourliner L, and the iF Design Award of 2017.
Earlier generations and dates
MAN’s release of 13 September 2023 places the Tourliner’s launch shortly after MAN’s acquisition of Gottlob Auwärter GmbH & Co. KG on 20 June 2001. A design concept called “X-liner” was shown at the IAA in 2002, and the first-generation Tourliner was presented at the former parent factory in Möhringen in July 2003, under the motto “Tourliner Summertime”. Sales began with a two-axle Tourliner SHD and a long three-axle Tourliner SHD L. The release says the MAN Lion’s Coach, revamped in 2002, was “to serve as the technical basis for the first NEOPLAN coach” and that the Tourliner shared its skeleton with its MAN counterpart, so it had no forward-angled window pillars or split windscreen. It had NEOPLAN single-spotlight headlights, round LED rear lights and, unlike the MAN coach, “the platforms typical for NEOPLAN”. Around 2,500 first-generation coaches were registered, right-hand-drive models for the United Kingdom among them, and about 70 per cent of them were the 12-metre two-axle version.
The same release’s text puts the total at around 3,850 Tourliners of both generations since 2003, more than 2,500 of them 12-metre two-axle coaches; its summary says “More than 3,850 vehicles have been sold”. MAN’s release of 18 July 2016, from its Spanish press room, said that the D2676 LOH in Euro 6c at 420 CV would replace the 400 CV D2066 LOH in MAN and NEOPLAN buses, with 20 CV and 200 Nm more, and that the Tourliner had a lift for boarding the high-floor coach.
