The PACCAR PX-5 is a 4.5-litre four-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel engine with intercooling, which DAF fits to its distribution trucks. DAF’s documents describe it as a Euro 6 engine with exhaust gas recirculation, a diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction. They show two stages: an earlier Euro 6 PX-5 rated at 135 and 157 kW, and a redesigned PX-5 that DAF announced for its LF on 6 October 2022, rated at 124 to 153 kW, which DAF lists on the XB that followed in 2023. On this site it is one of the engines of the DAF XB.

Status as of 26 October 2026. Read that day: DAF’s PX-5 engine brochure (file HQP-70273, undated, hosted on daftrucks.gr); DAF’s press releases of 15 October 2015, 6 October 2022 and 23 August 2023; DAF’s New Generation DAF XB product pages, global and British; DAF Trucks Ltd’s specification sheet for the XB 190 of 10 July 2025; and DAF’s alternative-fuels infosheet. All are DAF documents; apart from the specification sheet, each carries the line “A PACCAR COMPANY”.

Maker, name and layout

The engine carries the PACCAR name: DAF’s documents call it the “PACCAR PX-5”. None of the documents read for this page says where the PX-5 is built. The PX-7, a separate 6.7-litre six-cylinder engine that DAF often lists beside it, is not covered here.

DAF names the ratings by family and figure. The brochure lists “PX-5 135” and “PX-5 157”, the number being the output in kW. On DAF Trucks Ltd’s XB 190 specification sheet the PX-5 versions are “XB NewGen 170 PX-5”, “XB NewGen 190 PX-5” and “XB NewGen 210 PX-5”, numbers that match the horsepower in DAF’s rating table: 170, 190 and 210 hp.

The brochure describes a “Four-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel engine with intercooling”, with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) “aftertreatment for Euro 6 emission levels”. DAF’s release of 6 October 2022 and its XB pages give the same 4.5 litres and four cylinders for the redesigned engine.

Every row whose only document is the brochure describes the earlier engine: none of the documents of 2022 to 2025 read for this page gives the bore and stroke, compression ratio, valves, pistons and crankshaft, injection system, emission-control hardware or exhaust brake of the redesigned PX-5, for which the release of 6 October 2022 lists “new low-friction pistons”. How SCR and AdBlue work is covered in SCR and AdBlue explained, and the exhaust brake is one of the endurance brakes described in retarders and engine braking.

Ratings as the maker states them

The earlier Euro 6 PX-5: DAF’s brochure

PACCAR PX-5 ratings in DAF’s engine brochure HQP-70273 (Euro 6)
RatingOutput kW (hp)Torque
PX-5 135135 (184)750 Nm at 1,100–1,600 rpm
PX-5 157157 (213)850 Nm at 1,200–1,500 rpm

The brochure marks both outputs “at rated engine speed 2300 rpm”. Its section headed “Distribution applications up to 16 tonnes” says the engines “are suitable for trucks up to 16 tonnes” and are available “with outputs up to 210 hp” and a maximum torque of 850 Nm; its table gives the higher rating as 157 kW (213 hp).

The redesigned PX-5: DAF’s releases and XB pages

DAF’s release of 6 October 2022 gives the redesigned PX-5 “outputs from 124 kW (170 hp) to 153 kW (210 hp)” in three ratings and lists each with its torque and engine-speed range. DAF’s launch release for the XB of 23 August 2023 and its XB product pages give the same three ratings with the same figures.

PACCAR PX-5 ratings on DAF’s New Generation DAF XB product pages
Output kW (hp)Maximum torque
124 (170)700 Nm at 1,100–1,700 rpm
139 (190)750 Nm at 1,200–1,700 rpm
153 (210)800 Nm at 1,300–1,700 rpm

DAF Trucks Ltd’s XB 190 specification sheet of 10 July 2025 prints the three versions as 124 kW / 169 hp, 139 kW / 189 hp and 153 kW / 208 hp. The same sheet’s driveline entry describes its engine as “Engine PX-5, 4 cylinder diesel engine, 4.5 litres”, with “Output 139 kW (189 hp) at 2300 rpm” and “Max. torque 745 Nm at 1200-1700 rpm”, where the rating table gives 750 Nm.

How kW and hp relate, and what the engine speed beside each figure means, is explained in reading truck power figures.

Generations

The documents read for this page show two stages of the PX-5. None of them dates the engine’s introduction or a version before Euro 6.

Euro 6 by 2015

DAF’s PX-5 brochure, hosted on daftrucks.gr, carries no date. It says the 4.5-litre engine “uses common rail technology, a turbo with variable geometry”, and that for Euro 6 “it features exhaust gas recirculation, together with SCR technology and an active soot filter”. DAF’s release of 15 October 2015 added the chassis of the DAF LF to the DAF Components range as a module for compact buses with 30 to 40 seats, “with 4.5-litre PACCAR PX-5 four-cylinder and 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 six-cylinder engines (Euro 6)”. The release gives “ratings of 112 kW/152 hp to 231 kW/314 hp” for the two engines together and no separate PX-5 figures.

2022: the redesign for the DAF LF

On 6 October 2022 DAF announced “New PACCAR PX-engines and PowerLine transmissions” for its LF distribution series and said the 4.5-litre PX-5 had been “completely redesigned”. The release lists a new Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) block with a cast-iron cylinder head, new low-friction pistons, new compressors and a new waste-gate turbo. It gives the LF “7 output ratings” in all, three of them for the PX-5, and pairs the engines with a new 8-speed PowerLine automatic gearbox.

2023: the DAF XB

DAF’s release of 23 August 2023 introduced the New Generation DAF XB, “a full series of distribution vehicles in the 7.5 up to 19 tonnes class”, available “with 4.5 litre 4-cylinder PACCAR PX-5” engines at the same three ratings. The release says the series “will enter production in the fourth quarter of 2023”. DAF Trucks Ltd’s GB specification sheet for the XB 190 carries the edition 202545A of 10 July 2025.

Fuels and emission class

The brochure and the XB 190 sheet describe the PX-5 as a diesel engine; none of the documents read for this page lists a natural-gas version.

  • HVO. DAF’s XB release and product pages say the PX-5 is “ready for the application of HVO” and give a CO2 reduction of up to 90% on a “well-to-wheel” basis. DAF’s alternative-fuels infosheet says “All DAF vehicles run on HVO” and lists HVO under EN15940. HVO is covered in what is HVO fuel.
  • Biodiesel blends. The same infosheet says “PACCAR PX engines can use up to B20”. It names no PX engine for B100.

Each document read that names an emission class gives the PX-5 as Euro 6: the brochure’s aftertreatment is “for Euro 6 emission levels”, the release of 15 October 2015 lists the engine as “(Euro 6)”, and the XB 190 sheet of 10 July 2025 gives “Exhaust emission Euro 6”. None of them names the Euro VI step (A to E) of a given build. The steps from Euro VI A to E and what Euro 7 adds are covered in Euro VI and Euro 7.
