Renault Trucks DTI 5 engine: 5.1-litre diesel, ratings and trucks
Renault Trucks' 5.1-litre four-cylinder diesel from the maker's own documents: Euro 6, 154 and 176 kW, 800 and 900 Nm, B30, B100 and XTL fuels, and the trucks that use it.

The Renault Trucks DTI 5 is a 5.1-litre diesel engine with four cylinders in line. Renault Trucks’ brochure for its distribution and light construction range, the D, D Wide and C 2.3, lists it as the “DTI 5 EURO 6 ENGINE” with two ratings, 154 kW (210 hp) with 800 Nm and 176 kW (240 hp) with 900 Nm, and places it in the Renault Trucks D with the 2.1 m cab. The same brochure says that the DTI 5 and DTI 8 “bio-diesel engines” are compatible with B30 and B100, and its engine table adds XTL.
Status as of 26 October 2026. Three editions of Renault Trucks’ brochure for the D, D Wide and C 2.3 (UK English, 09/2023; Spanish, 10/2023; French, 02/2024) and two Renault Trucks press releases, of 12 December 2018 and 2 May 2022, were read on 26 October 2026. Renault Trucks gives the DTI 5’s data inside these vehicle documents; none of the documents read is a data sheet for the engine alone. Figures are given in kilowatts, horsepower and newton-metres as the brochure prints them; how the units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.
What the DTI 5 is
The maker is Renault Trucks, and its brochure spells the name “DTI 5”. Renault Trucks’ release of 2 May 2022 speaks of the Renault Trucks D “with 5 and 8 litre engines”. The engine table on page 39 of the UK edition gives the base data below.
| Item | As the brochure gives it |
|---|---|
| Engine | DTI 5 EURO 6 ENGINE (listed under “DIESEL ENGINES”) |
| Fuel note | Compatible with bio-diesel (240 hp) and XTL |
| Displacement | 5.1 l |
| Cylinders | 4 in line |
| Bore | 110 mm |
| Stroke | 135 mm |
| Weight (including oil) | 564 kg |
| Ratings | 154 kW (210 hp) – 800 Nm; 176 kW (240 hp) – 900 Nm |
The Spanish edition (10/2023) and the French edition (02/2024) print the same displacement and the same two ratings, with the horsepower as “CV” and “ch”.
Fuels
The DTI 5 is listed among the brochure’s “DIESEL ENGINES”. On its profitability pages the brochure says: “DTI 5 and DTI 8 bio-diesel engines compatible with fuel types B30 and B100.” The engine table on page 39 ties its bio-diesel note to one rating: the DTI 5 column reads “Compatible with bio-diesel (240 hp) and XTL”. Renault Trucks’ release of 12 December 2018 called the D and D Wide 2019 “Biodiesel compatible (up to 100%)”.
The documents read do not use the word HVO. What XTL means on a fuel pump, and how it relates to HVO, is explained in What is HVO? The brochure lists no gas version of the DTI 5: its natural gas engine is a separate engine, the NGT 9 of the D Wide CNG.
Emission class and exhaust after-treatment
The brochure titles the engine “DTI 5 EURO 6 ENGINE” and prints no step letter. The step is named in the release of 12 December 2018: “The DTI 5, DTI 8 and DTI 11 engines already comply with the Euro 6 Step D regulation due to take effect on 1 September 2019.” What the step letters mean is set out in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks.
For the exhaust, the brochure states: “To respect the Euro 6 standard concerning polluting emissions, Renault Trucks D vehicles are fitted with an SCR system”. It then lists cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction “with injection of AdBlue®” (SCR), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and an exhaust gas heating system with a dedicated injector, the last marked “(except DE11)”. What the law asks an SCR system to detect is set out in SCR and AdBlue.
Versions and dates
The documents read do not give the year the DTI 5 was introduced. They cover the engine from its Euro 6 Step D version onward.
Euro 6 Step D (release of 12 December 2018). Renault Trucks presented the 2019 version of the D and D Wide “together with new Euro 6 Step D engines”. For the DTI 5 the release names compliance with Step D ahead of 1 September 2019, a “new-generation particulate filter” for the D and D Wide engines, which it calls “motorisations”, and new engine software: “the DTI 5 and DTI 8 engines have been fitted with new engine software.” Among the redesigned auxiliaries of the D and D Wide it lists a new oil cooling system and a low-flow water pump.
2023 models (release of 2 May 2022). Under the heading “Renault Trucks D: a new powertrain and new Optishift automatic gearbox”, Renault Trucks wrote that the “Renault Trucks D with 5 and 8 litre engines are fitted with a new 8-speed gearbox, called Optishift”, a fully automatic gearbox. The release gives no ratings for the 5-litre engine.
Brochure editions of 2023 and 2024. The UK edition (09/2023), the Spanish edition (10/2023) and the French edition (02/2024) list the DTI 5 as a Euro 6 engine at 210 and 240 hp. The UK edition’s profitability pages announce a “4-CYLINDER ENGINE (DTI 5)”, “available in 210 hp and 240 hp”.
Ratings as Renault Trucks states them
| Rating (curve label) | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| DTI 5 - 210 HP | 154 kW (210 hp) | 800 Nm |
| DTI 5 - 240 HP | 176 kW (240 hp) | 900 Nm |
The brochure draws each rating as a torque and power curve over engine speed (rpm) but prints no engine-speed figure for either rating.
Engine braking is rated separately. The brochure’s retarder table lists an exhaust brake for the DTI 5 with a retarding power of 80 kW. What an exhaust brake is, and how the law groups it with retarders, is explained in What is a retarder?
Trucks and buses on this site with the Renault Trucks DTI 5
One model on this site records the DTI 5, a truck; no bus on this site records it. The figures are those of the model’s own page and of the source that page cites, in kilowatts and newton-metres as the site’s record keeps them.
| Model | Engine as recorded | Power (kW) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Trucks D and D Wide | DTI 5 | 154–176 | 800–900 |
The model page covers the D and the D Wide together. Renault Trucks’ brochure lists the DTI 5 only under the 2.1 m cab width of the D, not under the 2.3 m cab of the D Wide and C 2.3.
