The Renault Trucks DTI 8 is a 7.7-litre diesel engine with six cylinders in line. Renault Trucks’ brochure for its distribution and light construction range, the D, D Wide and C 2.3, lists it as the “DTI 8 EURO 6 ENGINE” with three ratings: 184 kW (250 hp) with 950 Nm, 206 kW (280 hp) with 1,050 Nm and 235 kW (320 hp) with 1,200 Nm. The brochure lists it under both of the range’s cab widths, the 2.1 m cab of the D and the 2.3 m cab of the D Wide and C 2.3. It also says that the DTI 5 and DTI 8 “bio-diesel engines” are compatible with B30 and B100, and its engine table adds XTL.

Status as of 27 October 2026. The English edition (09/2024) of Renault Trucks’ brochure for the D, D Wide and C 2.3 was last read on 27 October 2026, and the 09/2023 edition on Renault Trucks’ UK site on 17 October 2026. Renault Trucks’ Distribution range page, its press releases of 12 December 2018 and 2 May 2022 and its 05/2022 brochure for militarised logistics trucks were read on 26 October 2026. Renault Trucks gives the DTI 8’s data inside these vehicle documents; none of them is a data sheet for the engine alone. Figures are given in kilowatts, horsepower and newton-metres as Renault Trucks lists them; how the units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.

What the DTI 8 is

The maker is Renault Trucks. Its brochure spells the name “DTI 8” and, on its profitability pages, announces a “6 CYLINDER (DTI 8) ENGINE”, “available in 250 hp, 280 hp and 320 hp”. Renault Trucks’ Distribution range page writes “DTi 8”, and its release of 2 May 2022 speaks of the Renault Trucks D “with 5 and 8 litre engines”. On its specifications pages the brochure gives the engine a block of its own under “DIESEL ENGINES”, with the base data below.

Renault Trucks DTI 8 base data in Renault Trucks’ D / D Wide / C 2.3 brochure, English edition 09/2024, page 39.

The 09/2023 edition on Renault Trucks’ UK site prints the same engine block, with the same displacement, cylinders, bore, stroke, weight and ratings.

Fuels

On its profitability pages the brochure says: “DTI 5 and DTI 8 bio-diesel engines compatible with fuel types B30 and B100.” The engine block on page 39 reads “Compatible with bio-diesel (320 hp) and XTL”, naming one rating in brackets; the brochure does not say what the bracket covers. Renault Trucks’ release of 12 December 2018 called the D and D Wide 2019 “Biodiesel compatible (up to 100%)”.

None of the documents cited here uses the word HVO. What XTL means on a fuel pump, and how it relates to HVO, is explained in What is HVO?

The 2018 release also said that the D and D Wide 2019 were “available in a CNG version”. In the 09/2024 brochure the natural gas engine of the range is a separate engine, the NGT 9 of the D Wide CNG, and no gas version of the DTI 8 is listed.

Emission class and exhaust after-treatment

The 09/2024 brochure titles the engine “DTI 8 EURO 6 ENGINE” and prints no step letter. The step is named in the release of 12 December 2018: “The DTI 5, DTI 8 and DTI 11 engines already comply with the Euro 6 Step D regulation due to take effect on 1 September 2019.” What the step letters mean is set out in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks.

For the exhaust, the brochure states: “To respect the Euro 6 standard concerning polluting emissions, Renault Trucks D vehicles are fitted with an SCR system”. It then lists cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction “with injection of AdBlue®” (SCR), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and an exhaust gas heating system with a dedicated injector, the last marked “(except DE11)”. What the law asks an SCR system to detect is set out in SCR and AdBlue.

Renault Trucks’ 05/2022 brochure for militarised logistics trucks names a second emission class. Below its “RANGE OVERVIEW / EURO 6”, on the same page, it prints a “RANGE OVERVIEW / EURO 3”, in which the D with the 2.1 m cab, as a 4x2 and a 4x4 rigid, has the DTI 8 at 220 hp, 250 hp and 280 hp. It gives no kilowatt or torque figures for these Euro 3 ratings.

Versions and dates

The documents read do not give the year the DTI 8 was introduced, and none of them names an earlier engine it replaced. The dated documents begin with its Euro 6 Step D version.

Euro 6 Step D (release of 12 December 2018). Renault Trucks presented the 2019 version of the D and D Wide “together with new Euro 6 Step D engines”. For the DTI 8 the release names compliance with Step D ahead of 1 September 2019, a “new-generation particulate filter” for the D and D Wide engines, which it calls “motorisations”, and new engine software: “the DTI 5 and DTI 8 engines have been fitted with new engine software.”

2023 models (release of 2 May 2022). Under the heading “Renault Trucks D: a new powertrain and new Optishift automatic gearbox”, Renault Trucks wrote that the “Renault Trucks D with 5 and 8 litre engines are fitted with a new 8-speed gearbox, called Optishift”, a fully automatic gearbox. The release gives no ratings for the 8-litre engine.

Militarised logistics trucks (brochure, 05/2022). Its Euro 6 overview lists the DTI 8 at 250 and 280 hp in the D with the 2.1 m cab, at 250, 280 and 320 hp in the 4x2 rigid with the 2.3 m cab of the D Wide, and at 280 and 320 hp in the 4x2 tractor with that cab. Its Euro 3 overview, described above, lists 220, 250 and 280 hp in the 2.1 m cab.

Brochure editions of 09/2023 and 09/2024. Both print the same DTI 8 engine block: 7.7 l, six in line, and 184, 206 and 235 kW. Both list 320 hp for the D as well, with a footnote that gives the D’s DTI 8 320 hp as available only with the 8-speed automatic gearbox. In the 09/2024 edition the footnote’s asterisk stands at every D row with the 320 hp, in the 09/2023 edition only at the 18 t and 19 t row.

Distribution range page (read 26 October 2026). Renault Trucks’ corporate page lists “DTi 8 : 250/280/320 hp” for the D Wide and “DTi 8: 250/280 hp” for the D, without the 320 hp that the brochures list for the D.

Ratings as Renault Trucks states them

Renault Trucks DTI 8 ratings in the D / D Wide / C 2.3 brochure, English edition 09/2024, page 39.

Engine braking is rated separately. The brochure lists an exhaust brake as standard, and its retarder table gives the DTI 8 an exhaust brake with 120 kW and the Optibrake, which the brochure calls the “Optibrake engine brake”, with 170 kW of retarding power. What an exhaust brake is, and how the law groups it with retarders, is explained in What is a retarder?
