The Volvo D11 is Volvo Trucks’ 10.8-litre diesel engine with six cylinders in line. Volvo’s engine fact sheets describe an in-line six with “an overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder” and, in its Euro 6 versions, common rail fuel injection; the Euro 4/5 version, the D11C, has unit injectors. Volvo’s data sheets list the engine under four groups of type designations, D11A at Euro 3, D11C at Euro 4/5 and D11K and D11S at Euro 6, at ratings from 330 to 460 hp. On this site it is one of the diesel engines of the Volvo FM and the Volvo FMX; Volvo Buses lists the D11K in the B11R bus chassis, and in North America Volvo introduced an updated D11 for model year 2017.

Status as of 26 October 2026. Volvo Trucks’ fact sheets for the D11C450, D11K460 and D11S460A, three Volvo model range data sheets for D11 trucks (two FM sheets of 4 December 2024 and one FMX sheet of 17 February 2026), Volvo Buses’ Australian data sheet for the B11R and Volvo’s North American engine release of 22 March 2016 were read on 26 October 2026. Each figure is given in the units its document uses: hp, kW and Nm in the fact sheets and data sheets, hp and lb-ft in the North American release. How the units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.

What the D11 is

The name carries the size. Volvo’s fact sheets give the displacement as 10.8 litres, and Volvo’s North American release of 2016 calls the engine the “11-liter D11”. All three fact sheets describe the same base layout: six cylinders in line with a bore of 123 mm and a stroke of 152 mm, an overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. The timing mechanism sits at the rear of the engine, which, in the words of the D11K460 and D11S460A sheets, “permits the fitting of a rear-mounted power take-off”; mounted on the flywheel, that power take-off permits torque “up to 1,000 Nm in continuous operation”.

The fuel injection is where the versions part. The D11S460A and D11K460 fact sheets describe “common rail fuel injection”, on the D11K with “high injection pressure, up to 2400 bar”; the D11C450 fact sheet describes “unit injectors that permit high injection pressure”. The three sheets give the base data below.

Fuels

Volvo’s three engine fact sheets and three model range data sheets describe the D11 as a diesel engine. Volvo’s FMX D11 data sheet of 17 February 2026 carries an equipment code, DIESEL-B, for “Fuel blends up to 100% biodiesel”. Volvo Buses’ B11R data sheet lists the engine as “certified for usage with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO according to standard EN 15940)” and notes “Biodiesel available for D11K460”. The fuel itself is explained in What is HVO? None of the documents read lists a gas-fuelled D11.

Emission class

Volvo’s model range data sheets give each D11 type designation an emission level, and the sheets define the emission codes they use; the engine fact sheets put a code beside the D11C450, D11K460 and D11S460A:

  • D11A: “Euro 3”. The FM sheets define the code EU3 as “Euro 3 emission level”.
  • D11C: “Euro 4/5”. The D11C450 fact sheet gives EU4SCR or EU5SCR-M, which the FM sheets define as “Euro 4 with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)” and “Euro 5 with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)”.
  • D11K and D11S: “Euro 6”. The D11K460 and D11S460A fact sheets give EU6SCR, which all three data sheets define as “Euro 6 with SCR, particulate filter and EGR, Turbo-S”.

On the Euro 6 versions, the D11S460A and D11K460 fact sheets describe an aftertreatment system that, in the silencer, “combines a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a Selective Catalytic Reduction unit (SCR) and an Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC)”, with AdBlue sprayed into the exhaust gases in the mixing zone of the SCR unit. The fact sheets name no Euro 6 step (the steps are explained in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks). The D11C450 sheet says the exhaust gases are after-treated with SCR “so the engine meets either the Euro 4 or Euro 5 standards”. How SCR and AdBlue work is covered in SCR and AdBlue.

Versions and generations

The documents read for this page do not give the year the D11 was introduced in Europe. The dates below are those of the documents themselves.

D11A, Euro 3. The two FM D11 data sheets of 4 December 2024, which carry the code CHN, list the D11A330, D11A370 and D11A430. The FMX data sheet of 17 February 2026 does not list a D11A.

D11C, Euro 4/5 with SCR. The D11C450 fact sheet, version 01 of 27 March 2023, describes the D11C as an engine with unit injectors and SCR aftertreatment, and names “tanker, bulk goods, regional long haul distribution and light construction” as examples of its uses. All three data sheets list the D11C330, D11C370, D11C410 and D11C450.

D11K, Euro 6. The D11K460 fact sheet, version 02 of 21 June 2021, says the D11K “is designed for long-haul and distribution operations”, gives its common rail system “the capability of multiple injections” and its idling speed as “lowered to 550 rpm”. All three data sheets list the D11K330, D11K380 and D11K430, without a torque figure; the FMX sheet of 17 February 2026 also lists the D11K460. Volvo Buses’ B11R data sheet of 26 November 2019 lists the bus chassis with the “D11K”, “Euro 6”, “SCR, Common rail”, in three ratings: the D11K380, the D11K430 and the D11K460.

D11S, Euro 6. The D11S460A fact sheet, version 01 of 25 February 2022, describes “combustion chambers with wave pistons” under the heading “Piston with wave pattern”. All three data sheets list four D11S ratings, D11S330A, D11S380A, D11S430A and D11S460A, each with its torque. The documents read do not say whether the D11S succeeds the D11K or runs alongside it.

North America, model year 2017. Volvo Trucks North America introduced its model year 2017 engines on 22 March 2016, among them an updated “11-liter D11”. The release says that “The 2017 Volvo D11 offers up to 425 horsepower and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 20 horsepower”, that the updated engines use a common-rail fuel system, and names “regional, less than truckload (LTL) and pickup-and-delivery applications” as the D11’s uses. It names the Volvo VN daycabs, the VNM 430 and VNL 430 sleeper models and the VAH and VHD models as the trucks with the D11. The documents read do not say whether the D11 is still offered in North America.

Ratings as Volvo states them

Between them, the three model range data sheets list fifteen D11 type designations, each with its emission level, power in hp and kW and, for all but the D11K, its torque. In each designation the number matches the power in hp; the documents read do not explain the letters.

The sheets do not agree on every figure. The FM sheets give the D11C330 1,970 Nm and the FMX sheet 1,600 Nm; for the D11C410 the FM sheets give 1,970 Nm and the FMX sheet 1,950 Nm. The D11K460 fact sheet gives 460 hp (339 kW) and 2,200 Nm, where the FMX data sheet lists the D11K460 at 460 hp/338 kW without a torque figure. All three fact sheets and all three model range data sheets give the displacement as 10.8 litres.
