The TopClass is the touring-coach series that Setra calls “Setra’s premium model series”. Setra’s data sheets describe the brand as “A Daimler Truck AG Brand”, and Daimler Truck’s releases place series production of the TopClass 500 at the Daimler Buses plant in Neu-Ulm. Setra’s international site lists four models: three high-deck coaches on three axles, the S 515 HDH, S 516 HDH and S 517 HDH, which it groups as the TopClass 500, and the S 531 DT double-decker. Daimler Truck reported on 6 October 2025 that a jury of 24 trade journalists from 24 countries had named the TopClass “Coach of the Year 2026” after testing an S 516 HDH; the award was presented at Busworld Europe 2025 in Brussels. Setra sells the ComfortClass 500 beside it, a series of HD coaches from the 10.5-metre S 511 HD to the S 519 HD of almost 15 metres.

The specification tables on this page come from the two “Technical data and equipment” sheets that Setra’s international site issues for the HDH models and for the S 531 DT, both footed 09/2026 and downloaded on 7 October 2026; the German HDH sheet of the same footer carries the same figures. The previous editions, footed 03/2026, were still the ones served on 4 September 2026 (Internet Archive captures). Daimler Truck’s press material supplies the vehicle profiles of the S 516 HDH (18 September 2022 and 30 June 2025) and of the S 531 DT (31 August 2023), the equipment descriptions of 30 June 2025 and the dates of the earlier generations (23 April 2026). The sheets mark equipment ● standard and ○ optional.

The three HDH models share the width, the height, the overhangs and the 1,350 mm between drive axle and trailing axle; their wheelbases between front axle and drive axle are 5,470, 6,300 and 7,140 mm. Each sheet prints a “Turning circle” and a “Turning circle min.” row with the same figures. Setra’s model page describes “three model variants from 12.5 to 14.2 metres in length” and “three axles with plenty of payload reserves”, calls the S 515 HDH “the 12-metre long touring coach” with “a turning circle of almost 20 metres”, and the S 516 HDH “the 13.3-metre-long three-axle vehicle”. Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 gives the S 515 HDH “a turning circle of less than 20 meters”. The vehicle profiles of the S 516 HDH (2022 and 2025) and of the S 531 DT (2023) print the same lengths, widths, heights, wheelbases, overhangs and turning circles as the sheets. Neither sheet prints a wheel formula. Rows of this kind are explained in how a coach specification sheet is read.

Engine

Every engine row on both sheets names the OM 471, a 6-cylinder in-line engine of 12.8 litres that Setra’s model page describes as coming from Mercedes-Benz; the S 516 HDH vehicle profiles give its displacement as 12,809 cm³. The HDH sheet has two engine rows for each model: an unstarred row with 350 kW and 2,300 Nm, and starred rows, which its footnote explains as “* Optional equipment”, with 375 kW and 2,500 Nm. Both rows read “At speed [1/min] 1.100” and do not say whether the speed belongs to the output or to the torque. The S 531 DT sheet lists the 375 kW and 2,500 Nm rating only. Daimler Truck’s releases of 18 September 2022, 30 June 2025 and 6 October 2025 give the standard output as 350 kW (476 hp), “optionally 375 kW (510 hp)”; the 2022 release continues: “It is standard in a double-decker touring coach.” The vehicle profiles of the S 516 HDH and of the S 531 DT give 375 kW at 1,600 rpm and 2,500 Nm at 1,100 rpm.

The sheets print the EU emissions standard as “VI”. The vehicle profiles write Euro VI e (S 516 HDH, 2022), Euro VI E (S 531 DT, 2023) and Euro VI-E (S 516 HDH, 2025); the sub-stages are set out in Euro 6 and Euro 7 explained. In the HDH sheet footed 03/2026 both engine rows read “OM 471 Euro VI”; the 09/2026 edition writes “OM 471” in the first.

Setra’s 2026 magazine article on an update of its touring coaches says that “a new generation of engines is used in the TopClass and ComfortClass touring coaches as well as the Setra S 531 DT”, that with the ZF TraXon 2 Coach or the ZF EcoLife CoachLine it reduces diesel consumption “by four percent for the OM470 and by up to six percent for the OM471” and AdBlue consumption by up to nine percent, and that “the technical prerequisites for the regulatory requirements of the future Euro VII standard are already being delivered”. Daimler Truck’s release of 13 September 2026, issued for IAA Transportation, says: “From 2027, Daimler Buses will equip its coaches with the new engine generation and new transmissions”, naming the Setra ComfortClass, TopClass and double-decker models and the Mercedes-Benz Travego, Tourismo and Tourrider, with fuel consumption expected to fall by up to six percent depending on model and configuration. The same release says the new OM 470 and OM 471 will be built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim. No document opened reports series production of TopClass coaches with the new engine generation.

Gearbox

Each sheet has a single transmission row. In the 09/2026 editions it reads “ZF TraXon 2 Coach” for the three HDH models and “ZF EcoLife CoachLine” for the S 531 DT. In the 03/2026 editions it read “Mercedes-Benz GO 250-8, PowerShift 3, 8-speed” for all four. Daimler Truck’s releases of 18 September 2022 and 30 June 2025 say: “In the TopClass, all engines are coupled with the fully automated GO 250-8 PowerShift manual transmission”; the release of 6 October 2025 says the same of “Setra TopClass vehicles”, and the vehicle profiles of the S 516 HDH (2022, 2025) and of the S 531 DT (2023) and the Bus2Bus release of 23 March 2026 list the GO 250-8 PowerShift. Setra’s 2026 article calls the TraXon 2 Coach an automated manual transmission and the EcoLife CoachLine an automatic transmission; the model pages say the TraXon 2 Coach “contributes to improved fuel savings” and credit the EcoLife CoachLine with “extended maintenance intervals” and new torsional dampers that reduce vibration and noise. Daimler Truck’s release of 13 September 2026 says that “From 2027” Daimler Buses will equip its coaches with “new transmissions”; it does not name them. How an automated manual gearbox shifts is covered in automated manual transmissions.

Axles, suspension and brakes

The chassis tables are the same on all four models: power steering, a ZF front axle with independent wheel suspension, a Mercedes-Benz RO 440 driven axle and a ZF trailing axle with independent wheel suspension. The vehicle profiles name the front axle as a ZF RL 82 EC on the S 516 HDH and a ZF RL 75 E on the S 531 DT, list a ZF RL 82 EC against the S 531 DT’s trailing axle, and give the RO 440 a ratio of 3.583:1. Marked standard on all four are an anti-roll bar on the front and on the drive axle, active steering of the trailing axle, a raising and lowering system, kneeling and air suspension with electronic level control (ENR).

Pneumatic disc brakes on all axles, ESP, EBS, ABS, Brake Assist (BAS), Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR), a retarder limiter, the retarder, an automatic bus-stop brake with pull-away lock and the parking brake are all marked standard on all four; the HDH sheet adds a HOLD function, also standard. Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 describes the electronic parking brake as standard and released by pressing the accelerator, the HOLD function as engaged by pressing the brake pedal harder at a standstill, a starting-off aid for hills as standard, and, as an option, automatic application of the parking brake when the driver unfastens the belt and leaves the seat.

The vehicle profiles of the S 516 HDH (18 September 2022 and 30 June 2025) give the same gross weight of 24,750 kg but axle loads of 7,500 kg, 11,500 kg and 5,750 kg for front, rear and trailing axle: the drive-axle figure differs from the sheet’s 12,600 kg. The S 531 DT profile of 31 August 2023 gives the sheet’s 8,000, 12,600 and 6,800 kg.

Fuel, AdBlue, luggage and doors

The HDH sheet gives a fuel tank of approx. 520 litres for each model (the figure appears in two rows) and 39 litres of AdBlue in both of its AdBlue rows (“Usable volume / capacity AdBlue” and “AdBlue additive tank”); the S 516 HDH vehicle profiles give “approx. 53 l” of AdBlue. The S 531 DT sheet gives approx. 480 litres of fuel, an AdBlue tank of approx. 40 litres and a usable AdBlue volume of approx. 35 litres. Luggage-compartment volume is approx. 8.9, 11.4 and 13.9 m³ on the S 515, S 516 and S 517 HDH, each with an additional storage area of approx. 2.45 m³, and approx. 8.4 m³ on the S 531 DT, with 1.23 m³ of additional storage.

All four have two doors, door position A, outward-swivelling doors and door openings of approx. 900 mm. The entry height is approx. 370 mm at door 1 on all four and approx. 340 mm at door 2 on the HDH models (approx. 365 mm on the S 531 DT). The HDH sheet gives the step heights as 238 + 235 + 232 + 220 + 210 mm (5 steps) at entry 1 and 254 + 251 + 252 + 250 + 249 mm (5 steps) at entry 2, a pedestal height of 150 mm and a central-aisle floor approx. 1,600 mm above the road; the S 516 HDH vehicle profiles give the centre aisle as 1,390 mm above the road and the driver’s workplace floor as 1,070 mm. A lift is optional on the HDH models and a manual ramp on the S 531 DT. The HDH sheet’s wheelchair-space row carries a dash in all three columns; on the S 531 DT a wheelchair space is optional.

Setra’s model pages give the S 517 HDH “up to 59 seats” and the S 531 DT “space for up to 93 passengers”. The S 531 DT of the vehicle profile written for Busworld Europe 2023 has 78 seats plus a tour guide’s and the driver’s seat. On all four models the Setra Voyage seat is standard and the Voyage Plus, Voyage Ambassador and Ambassador are optional; the air-sprung GRAMMER Linea MSG 90.6 P driver’s seat is standard and the ISRI 6860, with an integrated pneumatic system and a 3-point belt, optional.

Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 describes partitions with tinted-glass inserts for 2+2 or 2+1 seating, black covers on the side-window dash supports and the toilet cabins, service sets with round air vents adjustable through 360°, monitors of 21.5 inches with 1920 x 1080 pixels, and a fragrance generator at the entrance with eight fragrances to choose from. On Setra’s model page the on-board toilet is integrated into the entrance area, and the optional Top Sky Panorama glass roof is a tinted double window above the centre aisle with an energy transmission of 21 percent and a light transmission of about three percent. In the S 531 DT two stairways lead to the upper deck, which Setra calls the panoramic deck; the front step can optionally be placed on the right-hand side, and a storage cabinet behind the last seat row is optional. Daimler Truck’s history of April 2026 says the lower deck of the S 531 DT introduced in 2017 “could be configured either as a touring coach for long-distance travel or as a scheduled-service bus for shorter intercity routes”.

Heating, air conditioning and lighting

Air conditioning at the driver’s area and EvoCool TopAir are standard on all four models; the HDH models also have a heater with convectors at the side walls as standard and an under-seat fan heater as an option, the S 531 DT a roof-mounted air-conditioning system with heat pump as standard, and all four offer a waistline heater as an option. Cooling capacity for the passenger compartment is 35 kW on the S 515 HDH, 39 kW on the S 516 and S 517 HDH and 50 kW on the S 531 DT; the driver’s area unit is 8 kW on all four. Heating power is 50 kW for the passenger compartment of the HDH models and 55 kW for the S 531 DT, and 18 kW at the driver’s seat on all four. The refrigerant filling is 4.8 kg on the HDH models and 15.9 kg on the S 531 DT, with CO₂ equivalents of 6.864 t and 22.737 t, which the sheets’ footnote ties to the installed air-conditioning variant. The English sheets label the units of these rows “hp/kW” and “lbs/kg”, the German HDH sheet “kW” and “kg”.

LED headlamps, LED daytime driving lights, a front fog lamp, cornering light, position lights and ambient lighting for reversing are standard on all four; ambient lighting for the luggage compartment and for the lift is optional. In the HDH sheet’s description, the high-beam assist is active from 35 km/h and switches off below 27 km/h. Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 describes the front: chrome brand lettering on a glossy black panel behind which the radar of the assistance systems sits, two chrome clasps, a Kässbohrer badge, a light guide that combines turn signal, daytime running light and position light and is the same part on both sides, LED headlamps in black chrome housings, a chrome signet on each flank, and rear lights with curved lines and the brand lettering. The profitability article of the same date gives the TopClass 500 a drag coefficient of Cd = 0.33 at its premiere and says the body is lowered automatically at motorway speeds.

Driver’s workplace

The S 516 HDH test coach of June 2025 has what Daimler Truck calls the Comfort Plus cockpit. Keyless Start, which the sheet calls drive authorization system 4 (DAS4), starts the engine with a button while the key stays in the driver’s pocket. The Coach Infotainment Series has a seven-inch monitor in the right-hand control panel, DAB+ radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, Bosch mySpin, two USB ports, an HDMI interface and navigation with a 3D map. The 360° camera system uses four cameras and a 10-inch monitor on the A-pillar, offers five views, works when moving forward up to approx. 30 km/h and when reversing, and shows the surroundings to about five to six metres; Daimler Truck lists it as an alternative to the standard reversing camera. MirrorCam replaces the exterior mirrors with heated cameras whose images appear on 15-inch monitors on the A-pillars, with an extra camera and a seven-inch monitor for the front right-hand corner. MirrorCam is an option on the S 531 DT sheet. The HDH sheet footed 03/2026 listed it as optional; the 09/2026 edition has no MirrorCam row in its tables but still describes the system on its description pages, and the TopClass 500 model page names MirrorCam among the safety functions of the TopClass models. Setra’s model pages describe the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive, with a main screen, a touchscreen and voice control; Daimler Truck’s release of 13 September 2026 says Daimler Buses is redesigning the driver’s workplace of its coaches with it.

Against the 03/2026 editions, the 09/2026 sheets add the rows for Active Sideguard Assist 3 and Cross Traffic Assist, both optional, and on the S 531 DT the row for Active Drive Assist 2, marked standard; they drop the optional 360° camera rows; the S 531 DT’s PPC and TPM rows in the profitability table changed from optional to standard. Daimler Truck’s release of 13 September 2026 names Active Sideguard Assist 3 and Cross Traffic Assist among the systems for which the new electronics architecture “will also provide the basis”. The regulatory background is in mandatory driver assistance systems; the June 2025 release says Setra’s coaches meet the requirements of the General Safety Regulation, “which have been mandatory since June 2024”.

The sheets’ descriptions carry the following figures. Frontguard Assist warns of people immediately in front of the vehicle when moving off or driving slowly, up to 15 km/h. Active Cross Traffic Assist brakes automatically for crossing vehicles in the angle range of 65° to 115°, over the entire speed range. Tyre pressure set 0.5 bar too low can raise fuel consumption by up to 5%, according to the HDH sheet’s TPM description. ABA 6 Plus initiates emergency braking against a rear-end collision with vehicles or stationary obstacles ahead and also detects moving or stationary pedestrians and cyclists in front of the vehicle. Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 says ABA 6 uses short- and long-range radar sensors and a camera, is fitted as standard in all Setra coaches, and raises its response to pedestrians and cyclists “from 50 to 60 km/h”; the release of 31 August 2023 describes its predecessor ABA 5, introduced with the 2022 generation, as reacting to persons up to 50 km/h. Sideguard Assist 2 covers both sides of the coach and, according to the June 2025 release, works as a lane-change assistant above 40 km/h; the same release says Sideguard Assist has been introduced gradually as an option in all Setra model series since 2018. Active Sideguard Assist 3 adds a stepped warning with active braking when the driver keeps turning despite a hazard. Attention Assist 2 warns visually and acoustically; the S 531 DT page describes a driver camera. Front Collision Guard places the driver’s workplace on a solid frame part that can move backwards as a whole in a frontal collision. The sheet’s description of the body to ECE-R 66.02 names circumferential, weight-optimised ring spans; what that regulation asks of a coach is in rollover strength. The June 2025 release lists Attention Assist, an interface for breathalysers at the driver’s workplace and the reversing camera as standard.

Active Drive Assist 2, optional on the HDH models, combines adaptive cruise control and lane keeping with an active steering assistant that uses an electric motor to support the hydraulic steering. Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025 says it “enables semi-automated driving in a coach for the first time”, keeps the coach in the centre of the lane or offset by ten to 20 centimetres, and steers over the whole speed range from 0 to 100 km/h on clearly marked roads. If the driver’s hands leave the wheel, a yellow warning follows after 15 seconds; after 60 seconds the Emergency Stop function brakes the coach to a standstill in its lane, with headlamps and hazard lights switched on 5 seconds before the end of the warning cascade.

Fuel-saving systems and service

Predictive Powertrain Control is standard on both sheets footed 09/2026. According to Daimler Truck’s release of 30 June 2025, it uses the topographical data of more than 95 percent of the motorways, main roads and interurban roads in many European countries, adjusts speed and gear changes and uses EcoRoll coasting; its deceleration response and its cornering speed can each be set in five stages. The release and the model pages give it a working range from 15 km/h. The same release says the on-board voltage is raised in overrun and lowered under traction, saving around 0.3 percent of fuel, and that this function is deactivated when the batteries’ state of charge drops below 70 percent; Driver Score evaluates the driving style in four categories, acceleration, braking, uniformity and coasting. The release gives maintenance intervals of up to 120,000 kilometres or two years.

Daimler Truck’s milestones of April 2026 say that in 2018, with the S 531 DT double-decker, Setra presented “the world’s first touring coach to be equipped as standard with an engine-compartment fire-suppression system”; both current sheets mark an extinguishing system as standard. Fire safety on coaches is covered in bus fire safety.
