The Volvo G13 is Volvo Trucks’ 13-litre gas engine for heavy-duty trucks. It runs on LNG or bio-LNG and lights the gas with a small amount of diesel or HVO, injected under high pressure. Volvo’s release of 5 May 2025 says the “G13 LNG engine is based on the D13 diesel Euro 6 engine”. Volvo dates the launch of its gas-powered trucks to 2018, gave the gas engines a Euro 6 step E update and a 500 hp level in February 2023, and on 12 May 2026 announced a G13 on an all-new 13-litre engine platform, at 420–500 hp and 2,400–2,800 Nm. In Volvo’s range it powers the gas versions of the Volvo FM, FH and FH Aero.

Status as of 26 October 2026. Volvo Trucks’ engine range page, its pages for the gas-powered Volvo FH, FH Aero and FM, four Volvo Trucks press releases (1 February 2023, 5 May 2025, 17 February 2026 and 12 May 2026) and three Volvo Trucks stories (21 March 2025 and two of 12 May 2026) were read on 26 October 2026. Volvo’s documents give power in hp and torque in Nm; how the units relate is explained in kW, hp and Nm: how to read a truck’s power figures.

What the G13 is

Volvo’s engine range page lists its gas engines under two names, G13 and G9, and describes the G13 as the “13-liter gas-powered” engine for heavy-duty trucks, “powered by LNG or bio-LNG”. The 9-litre G9 is a CNG engine and is not covered on this page. Volvo’s release of 5 May 2025 speaks of the “Volvo G13 LNG engine”, and the release of 12 May 2026 of “The G13 version” of its new engine platform.

Volvo’s documents call it the “13-liter” gas-powered engine, and this site’s model records give its displacement as 12.8 litres. The Volvo documents read for this page do not state its cylinder count, bore or stroke; the engine data that Volvo’s specification pages give for the G13 are set out on the Volvo FH and Volvo FM model pages.

The base engine is a diesel. Volvo’s 2025 release says the G13 is “based on the D13 diesel Euro 6 engine” (see Volvo D13 engine), and Volvo’s story of 21 March 2025 describes the route it took: “to use a common diesel engine as a base and adapt it to gas”.

Fuels and ignition

The G13 burns methane carried as a liquid: fossil LNG, bio-LNG, or both. Volvo’s story of 21 March 2025 says that trucks adapted for LNG “can switch seamlessly between the two fuel types – or even blend them together”, and its story of 12 May 2026 says the new engine “runs on regular LNG or Bio-LNG – or a blend”. Volvo’s release of 1 February 2023 describes bio-LNG as “liquid biogas (biomethane)”; how LNG and bio-LNG trucks are fuelled is explained in LNG and bio-LNG trucks.

The gas is not ignited by a spark plug. A key element, in Volvo’s words, is HPDI (high pressure direct injection), “a technology where a small amount of ignition fuel is injected with high pressure to enable compression ignition before the gas is added”. Volvo names the supplier of the HPDI system as Cespira. The ignition fuel is diesel or HVO; the 2023 release puts it as “A small amount of diesel or HVO is used to ignite the gas”, and Volvo’s story of 12 May 2026 on the new gas-powered engine gives its pilot fuel as “around 5–7% of total consumption”. HVO itself is described in What is HVO?

For the all-new platform announced on 12 May 2026, Volvo says the platform is “ready for alternative fuels such as biodiesel/B100, HVO, biogas/bio-LNG and green hydrogen”; the release words the hydrogen part as “future hydrogen applications”.

Emission class

The G13 is a Euro 6 engine. Volvo’s release of 1 February 2023 introduced “The new gas powered Euro6 step E engines” and refers to the engines before them as “the step D engines” (the step letters are explained in Euro VI (Euro 6) and Euro 7 for trucks). Volvo’s story of 12 May 2026 on the platform’s highlights calls it an “all-new 13-liter Euro 6 engine platform”, and the release of the same day says “The new Euro6 engines fulfil the new legal requirements NNR3 (New Noise Regulation Phase 3)”.

Versions and generations

Introduction (2018). Volvo’s release of 17 February 2026 says Volvo Trucks has delivered more than 10,000 gas-powered trucks globally “since the company introduced this technology in 2018”. The 2023 release dates the launch the same way: “Five years ago, Volvo Trucks launched its trucks that can run on liquified biogas”. The 2023 release names 420 and 460 hp as “the previous” power levels and refers to the engines before its update as “the step D engines”, without dating those ratings.

Euro 6 step E and the 500 hp level (February 2023). On 1 February 2023 Volvo announced that the gas-powered Volvo FH and FM “are getting a new power level of 500 hp, joining the previous 420 and 460 hp engines”. The release says the gas engines “have been completely updated”, with “new injectors and pistons for lowered friction, together with a new turbo, variable oil pump, and Crank Case Ventilation that handles unfiltered oil”. It lists the product models as “Volvo FH, FM and FMX (on request)”. Volvo’s release of 5 May 2025 gives the three power levels of the G13 with their torque, set out in the ratings table below.

The all-new 13-litre platform (announced 12 May 2026). Volvo Trucks announced “two all-new 13-liter engines”, a diesel D13 and a gas G13, “Both are based on Volvo’s latest in-house developed engine platform”. The release names “new cylinder and turbo designs” and “a refined engine brake functionality”, and gives the G13 version “420-500hp and 2,400-2,800Nm”. The engines “will be offered in the Volvo FM, FMX, FH and FH Aero models”. The release said that “Sales will begin during the third quarter of 2026”, with “the first markets being Europe, Morocco, Turkey and India, later followed by North America, Asia and South Africa”, and that the new engines “will initially be produced in Skövde, Sweden”, with the trucks assembled in Tuve, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium. Volvo’s story of the same day on the new gas-powered engine says it was “Built on a completely new 13-liter engine platform” and gives it “2800 Nm torque”. The documents read for this page do not say whether sales of the new G13 have begun.

Ratings as Volvo states them

Volvo’s documents give engine power in hp only, with torque in Nm. The 2026 release gives the new G13 as a range and does not list its steps.
