FPT Cursor 9 engine: versions, fuels, ratings and the vehicles that use it
FPT Industrial's 8.7-litre six-cylinder Cursor 9 in diesel, natural-gas and hydrogen versions: its ratings as FPT states them and the Iveco trucks and buses that use it.

The Cursor 9 is an 8.7-litre, six-cylinder in-line engine for trucks and buses, built by FPT Industrial, the powertrain brand of the Iveco Group. FPT’s truck page says Cursor 9 engines “are available in both Diesel and CNG versions, compliant with Euro VI Step E standards, with power ratings from 300 to 400 HP”. FPT lists the natural-gas version, the Cursor 9 NG, as “COMPATIBLE WITH CNG, LNG AND BIOMETHANE”, and in September 2024 it announced a hydrogen version, the CURSOR 9 H2, for its debut at IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover. On this site the engine appears in the records of two Iveco Bus models and three Iveco trucks.
Status as of 26 October 2026. FPT Industrial’s Cursor 9 and Cursor 9 NG product pages for trucks and buses (the diesel bus page in its German version) and its Cursor 9 truck datasheet for the 265 kW rating were read on 26 October 2026, together with four press releases from Iveco, Iveco Bus and FPT Industrial dated 2016 to 2025.
What the engine is
FPT Industrial S.p.A., based in Turin, describes itself in the footer of its pages as “a brand of Iveco Group”. The engine’s name is written several ways. FPT’s pages say CURSOR 9 or Cursor 9 for the diesel and CURSOR 9 NG for the natural-gas engine, which the same pages also call the Cursor 9 CNG/LNG. Iveco’s 2016 release introduced the gas engine as the Cursor 9 CNG, and Iveco Bus’s release of 21 February 2024 names “the Cursor 9 NP engine manufactured by FPT Industrial” for its URBANWAY CNG. The hydrogen version is the CURSOR 9 H2. The truck records on this site write the diesel as C9 and the gas engine as C9G; the bus and coach records write IVECO Cursor 9 Euro VI and IVECO Cursor 9 CNG Euro VI.
FPT’s datasheet for the 265 kW truck rating gives the engine as six cylinders with four valves each, written “6L / 4”, a displacement of 8.7 litres and a bore and stroke of 117 x 135 mm. FPT’s truck page says “The 6-cylinder and 8.7 liter Cursor 9 engines are also available in natural gas version”. The figures below are the ones FPT and Iveco print for each version.
| Item | Diesel (Cursor 9) | Natural gas (Cursor 9 NG) |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 8.7 l | 8.7 l |
| Cylinders | 6 in line, 4 valves per cylinder | 6 in line |
| Bore x stroke | 117 x 135 mm | Not given in the documents opened |
| Combustion and fuel system | ECR (electronic common rail) | Stoichiometric combustion, multi-point injection |
| Turbocharger | WG on the 265 kW datasheet; EVGT named on the product page | WG (FPT release, November 2025) |
| Aftertreatment | DOC + DPF + SCR + CUC (265 kW datasheet) | Three-way catalyst, no EGR and no SCR (Iveco release, 2016) |
| Emission class | Euro VI Step E | Euro VI Step E; Euro VI Step E2 in FPT’s November 2025 release |
| Fuels | Diesel | CNG, LNG and biomethane |
| Power ratings stated by FPT | 300 to 400 HP | 300 to 400 HP |
The diesel column comes from FPT’s Cursor 9 truck page, its German bus page and its datasheet for the 265 kW truck rating; the gas column from FPT’s Cursor 9 NG pages, Iveco’s 2016 release and FPT’s release of 26 November 2025. The datasheet’s legend expands WG as “Fixed Geometry Turbocharger with Waste Gate valve” and ECR as “Electronic Common Rail”. FPT’s truck page, for its part, says “The electronically-controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (EVGT) allows the development of maximum torque up to 1,700 Nm” on the diesel. The two FPT documents therefore name different turbochargers: the datasheet for its one rating, the page for the maximum torque figure.
For the exhaust, FPT’s truck page describes a “no-EGR architecture” and lists an “SCR-only ATS solution”; its German bus page names an “ATS-Lösung mit SCR Ti-V”. The datasheet for the 265 kW rating lists DOC + DPF + SCR + CUC, which its legend expands as a diesel oxidation catalyst, a “Diesel Particulate Filter w/ passive regeneration”, selective catalytic reduction and a clean-up catalyst. How an SCR system works with AdBlue is set out in SCR and AdBlue, and the steps of Euro VI up to Step E in Euro VI and Euro 7.
FPT’s truck and bus pages also say that the centrifugal blow-by systems and the electronic exhaust flap on Euro VI Step E engines increase engine brake power by up to 30%. Engine brakes and exhaust brakes are explained in retarders and engine braking.
Fuels: diesel, natural gas and hydrogen
For the diesel Cursor 9, none of the FPT documents opened for this page names HVO or another renewable diesel.
For the natural-gas version, FPT’s Cursor 9 NG truck and bus pages carry the line “COMPATIBLE WITH CNG, LNG AND BIOMETHANE” and name stoichiometric combustion. Iveco’s 2016 release, which introduced the gas engine as the Cursor 9 CNG, gives the same three forms: natural gas compressed (CNG) or as cryogenic liquefied natural gas (LNG), also in renewable form as biomethane. It says the engine uses stoichiometric combustion and, to meet the Euro VI rules, needs neither exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) nor selective catalytic reduction (SCR), relying instead on a three-way catalyst; it also names new multi-point injectors and a new fuel rail. FPT’s release of 26 November 2025 names the gas engine’s “inyección multipunto y su combustión estequiométrica” (multi-point injection and stoichiometric combustion) and lists it as compatible with “GNC, GNL y biometano”. Trucks that run on liquefied methane are covered in LNG and bio-LNG trucks.
FPT’s release of 16 September 2024 presents the new CURSOR 9 H2 as designed to power “urban and regional heavy trucks, heavy construction vehicles, and urban and intercity buses”, with its hydrogen engine technology “paired with a traditional mechanical driveline”. Its technical specifications give the same 8.7-litre displacement and six cylinders in line, port fuel injection (PFI), 310 hp, 1,400 Nm at 1,100 rpm and SCR aftertreatment. The release says the engine would debut in Hanover at IAA Transportation 2024, which it dates 17 to 22 September 2024; none of the documents opened for this page gives a date for series production. A hydrogen combustion engine burns hydrogen in its cylinders; the route is described in hydrogen trucks: fuel cell and hydrogen combustion.
Ratings as FPT states them
FPT’s truck page and its German bus page give one range for both the diesel and the CNG version, power ratings from 300 to 400 HP, and for the diesel a maximum torque of up to 1,700 Nm “at as low as 1,200 rpm”. FPT’s datasheet covers a single truck rating and refers readers to the FPT sales network and its website for ratings it does not list. The documents give these figures:
| Document | Version | Power | Torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| FPT Cursor 9 truck page and German bus page, read 26 October 2026 | Diesel and CNG | 300 to 400 HP (PS on the German page) | Up to 1,700 Nm at 1,200 rpm (diesel) |
| FPT Cursor 9 truck datasheet | Diesel | 265 kW (360 HP) at 2,200 rpm | 1,650 Nm at 1,200 rpm |
| Iveco release, 2016 | Cursor 9 CNG | Up to 400 PS at 2,000 rpm | Up to 1,700 Nm at 1,200 rpm |
| FPT release, 16 September 2024 | CURSOR 9 H2 | 310 hp | 1,400 Nm at 1,100 rpm |
| FPT release, 26 November 2025 | CURSOR 9 NG (Golden Dragon buses) | 360 HP | 1,640 Nm |
For its one rating the datasheet adds dimensions (L x W x H) of 1,181 x 1,001 x 1,079 mm and a dry weight of 860 kg, under the note “DIMENSIONS CAN BE CHANGED ACCORDING TO ENGINE OPTIONS”. FPT’s English pages give power in HP and its German bus page in PS, its datasheet in kW with HP in brackets, its 2024 release in hp and Iveco’s German release in PS; how the units and the rated speeds relate is set out in how to read a truck’s power figures.
Generations and dates
The FPT and Iveco documents opened for this page do not give the year the diesel Cursor 9 was introduced. FPT’s truck page marks one change between generations: the Euro V engines used Electronic Unit Injectors, and on the Euro VI Step E engines the common rail is integrated in the cylinder head. The dated steps in the documents are:
- 2016: Iveco’s release presents the new Cursor 9 CNG, first shown at the Beijing Bus and Truck Show. It took the place of the 7.8-litre Cursor 8 CNG, with new multi-point injectors and a new fuel rail, and was rated at up to 400 PS at 2,000 rpm and 1,700 Nm at 1,200 rpm.
- 21 February 2024: Iveco Bus’s release on URBANWAY CNG articulated buses for Greece says the 18-metre buses will be fitted with the Cursor 9 NP and meet “Euro VI-e emissions standards for CNG vehicles”.
- 16 September 2024: FPT announces the CURSOR 9 H2, to debut at IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover, dated 17 to 22 September 2024 in the release.
- 26 November 2025: FPT reports Golden Dragon buses with CURSOR 9 natural-gas engines delivered to the public transport board of Kragujevac, Serbia, and lists the CURSOR 9 NG’s specifications for them: 8.7 litres, six cylinders in line, a WG turbocharger, 360 HP, 1,640 Nm and Euro VI Step E2.
- 26 October 2026: FPT’s product pages describe diesel and CNG versions compliant with Euro VI Step E, rated from 300 to 400 HP.
Trucks and buses on this site with the FPT Cursor 9
Five Iveco ranges on this site name the Cursor 9 in their engine records: the Iveco Bus Crossway and Evadys, and the S-Way, T-Way and X-Way trucks. The Crossway and the S-Way list a natural-gas version as well.
| Model | Engine as recorded | Power (kW) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iveco Crossway | IVECO Cursor 9 Euro VI | 265–294 | 1,600–1,700 |
| Iveco Crossway | IVECO Cursor 9 CNG Euro VI | 265 | — |
| Iveco Evadys | IVECO Cursor 9 Euro VI | 294 | 1,700 |
| Iveco S-Way | FPT Cursor 9 (C9) | 251–294 | 1,400–1,700 |
| Iveco S-Way | FPT Cursor 9 natural gas (C9G) | 251–294 | 1,500–1,700 |
| Iveco T-Way | FPT Cursor 9 (C9) | 265 | 1,650 |
| Iveco X-Way | FPT Cursor 9 (C9) | 251–294 | 1,400–1,700 |
The figures are those of each model’s own page and the maker documents it cites, not FPT’s engine-level ranges. The Crossway record gives no torque for its natural-gas Cursor 9, and that cell is left empty. The URBANWAY and the Golden Dragon buses named in the releases above have no page on this site.
